Going by the descriptions in Gangs of New York (book and movie) seems like NYC always looked kinda gritty and crime ridden.

I miss that shyt. You go to the corner store get jumping jacks, thunderbombs(i think thats what they were called), m80s and block busters, them shyts that was on the stick that whistled when it went in to the sky then popped. We used to break the sticks off of them and them shyts would fly all over the place. lol looking back that was crazy to do.
But I remember we used to take an m80 or a blockbuster, put it by the payphone then when the shyt blew up nikkaz had change for days. Buying candy, more firecrackers.
The whistlers with the sticks broken off are called nikka chasers

I'm in the corona/Jackson heights area

A couple of ya made points that hit home
Free lunch in the summers
Chinese handball
Playing baseball on the sidewalk
Playing strike box against building walls
Playing basketball thru the fire escape ladder
Stray dogs everywhere
Drugs, gangs, violence
Stealing jansports in the 5th grade from the pile of book bags kids left to play in the school park after school
We was all poor we just didnt know it
It was simpler time
But u grew up fast
I seen more shyt before I turned 13 than after
We miss the shyt because it was fun
We didnt see the danger
shyt was normal to us
At 11 u didn't think it was weird to buy a bike for $5 from a crackhead
Street fighter 2 turbo was my shyt
Mortal kombat came out and crushed the buildings
But sf was still my shyt
I went to school by myself since first grade
Not alone but with other kids. No parents
I can't picture parents letting their kids do that now
And it's safer now
When I was like 6 I would get sent to the store to buy cigarettes, beer and play the lotto
Kids these days are p*ssy
They don't play outside
Or ride bike
I could have fun with a stick and some dirt
As long as I was outside
There was days I didn't eat
Just running around playing outside
Kids these days wanna play Xbox all day
In the fukkin summer
I just don't get it
I must admit that when I lived in bk recently it still felt hood
People outside always
Even at nite with their lil boom box playing dominoes and barbequeing
