It's not a fair comparison, Balor has been wrestling for about 15 years and Reigns has done it for about 5. Balor is new to WWE but not new to wrestling, it was really new for Reigns when he got his initial push.

I wasn't watching during Reigns's initial push but I'd imagine a lot of the issues people would have with it is the fact that he "didn't pay his dues". I don't really care either way

That's a shytty argument tho. Roman 'paid his dues' in the WWE in FCW and early NXT. And was a part of a group for years before sniffing the title.

Once you get to the E, what you did before doesn't matter. They've made that obvious many many times. So fans gotta leave that 'omg they've been wrestling forever they deserve XYZ' entitlement bullshyt behind. These wrestlers know what they signed up for.

If it were paying dues, Roman been there and done that.

A quick rise to the top for Finn Balor :leon:

Honestly, I think it is very quick, but it's pretty obvious that the higher-ups thought they were onto something ever since he stepped into NXT. Even guys who are into the big muscle dudes like Balor. I don't think he's the most spectacular worker of them all though, but he has the demon gimmick and people do actually like Balor.

The difference between Balor and Reigns' superman pushes is that people like Balor and he isn't an obvious corporate pick. People like to feel like they chose the champion or that their guy is rising to the top. Reigns had his moments when he was popular but it was clear from the jump that he was the company's guy. Even Punk's shoot confirmed that. The first time I realised that Reigns was going to be the main guy was Survivor Series 2013 when he pinned like 4 people in the traditional SS match.

Saying that, I'm actually a Reigns fan and have been impressed by some of his work in the last year. But simply, the fans aren't riding with him - they just like Balor :manny:

Well said plus he has a unique gimmick that he seemingly came up with himself on the idies and very well polished

He's been a big fish in a small pond for years.

I don't have any strong feelings either way but in terms of 'paying dues' you're comparing a few years in a developmental territory to being a champion in one of the biggest promotions in the world.

Also, like dude before me said, people just like Balor more than Reigns :yeshrug:

People gotta stomp acting dumb.

The difference is that Reigns push to the top came as there was a guy who was just a special kind of popular being shoved aside to make room for him. No one had been as over as Dbry was since Cena and Batista in 2005/Orton in 2004/Brock in 2002.

Imagine what would have happened if Rocky was being pushed over Austin in 1997?

The fans wanted Dbry and got Reigns instead. The fans just want Balor.

Situations aren't equal.

Finn's part of a trend in WWE. Someone in the office obviously has a hard on for Japanese Wrestling. Three of their singles champs right now have wrestled there, AJ just beat Cena clean, The Club are in a feud for the tag titles and they're loving off Kota Ibushi. shyt - even Brock wrestled out there. They've mentioned the IWGP title numerous times on TV and even called Crews by the name he wrestled under in Japan.

I feel like Vince likes the thought of having 'a movement ' under his umbrella, even if it's one that he didn't create. Either that, or he likes that he managed to buy his way into the zeitgeist by signing all this talent that has a buzz.

Outside of The Shield, I'm struggling to think of any runaway successes he's come up with in the last 5 years. I give way more credit to New Day for their success than Vince. They took a 'Shining Stars' level gimmick and made it one of the hottest acts in the business today.

It's just wild to me that the founder of Bullet Club is the champion on Raw.:mindblown:

Roman is a guy who they brought up in their own system, at a time when Vince has 'brand new toys' - it might just be a case of wrong place, wrong time for him, which is unfortunate - because I feel like he held up his end of the bargain and improved in the ring.

I can't blame Reigns for the promos that completely fukked the character. Vince's writing is woeful at times.

I don't even know if it's true, but it's an interesting thought.

It's just one way to look at it.

To me, If you look at both Reigns and Balor in a vacuum, then it makes no sense at all. But if you factor in the trends in what the company is doing - there is a kind of pattern. :manny:

...which is unfortunate for Roman because he's essentially the sacrificial lamb for the fans that are really just frustrated that Daniel Bryan is unhealthy.

I had it in the back of my mind during that entire run after he'd gotten written off with the Kane tombstone on the steps, that it probably wasn't a matter of them not wanting to give Bryan the title back. He HAD to give it up because he was unable to be trusted to run with it long-term. Dude was having SEIZURES out here and had already had his big Wrestlemania moment. They would've been better of leaving him out of the 2015 Rumble and calling it a day.

But it all went down before Bryan was injured. 2014 and 2015 Rumbles...the WWE made their choice and so did the fans.
