Just wrapped up Black Butler Book of Circus. It was outstanding, I would give it a 9.5/10. A bit of a slow start due to this being a partial reboot for the series.
The keys to the missing children lead the circus. One key relationship that was focused on was Ciel and Doll. In their first encounter Doll has the lie that she is freckles. She feels bad for "Smile" that she is lying to his face. Throughout the arc you see her trying to be there for him. The ultimate irony is that Ciel is lying to her face. At the end Ciel orders Sebastian to kill her. Despite the clear relationship that grew between the two, Ciel did what he needed to be done. As sad as that is unfortunately.
While this arc did dive into Ciel's past a bit, but it was only a tease. Kelvin is one such person that wanted Ciel to himself. Perhaps he has been wanting a child? But once he presumed Ciel died he was ruined. More so pointing to himself that he was ugly and literally remade himself. The sickening nature that he used the kidnapped children as the source with that, which is completely disgusting. The doctor points out the means rather than the process. But there is no way you can justify kidnapping and sacrificing children. That is fukking both disturbing and disgusting. It did help the orphans that he adopted, but the reality of their new bodies is just sickening.
Joker and the others while committed heinous crimes. You can't help but sympathize with them. They were given a home for the first and even body parts that they lost. They looked at Kelvin as their hero, but the worst part is how he lied to them. Part of their motivation was for the children in the orphanage, but little did they know that most likely has been gone for some time. Most likely they shared the same fate as the kidnapped children. It's even more depressing knowing that their cause for fighting was a lie. Really shows how sick both the doctor and Kelvin were.
A key focus on Ciel's character in this arc that I loved towards the end. Ciel was at his breaking point when he was captured when he was hungry. And thanks to Sebastian he survived and pressed forward. We also know his cold personality that we see when he is with Elizabeth. How different he was from back then.
Ciel still knows the suffering that he went through. Each of those kids went through that same suffering. This is something Ciel struggles with to this day. We also know those kids don't have the wealth or a demon like Sebastian to support them. So overall he decides to end their suffering. Yes they can live on, but he can't imagine the pain that living will burden him. Ciel comes off as edgy at the end, but it is more so to hide his true feelings. He knows he can't help those kids after saving them. He realizes the circus kids were lied to and used to do horrible deeds. Furthermore, he tries to hide it, but you can see Ciel has a big heart.
Will watch Book of Murder movie next along with Grimm Variation which is a project that Witt dropped on Netflix in April.
