Akudama Drive just aired today. I don't remember the last time I saw so much fukkery in an opening episode. There's a stretch where it feels like something completely incomprehensible is happening every minute. and then it ends that way.
Genre is cyberpunk. Starts off with a skydive into a futuristic urban city filled with corruption and pollution. Feels distant, and yet familiar at the same time. Then turns into a high octane, nighttime adventure through pockets of the city and factions within it.
Characters get introduced in the most dramatic of ways possible, like Hiro Protagonist (character feels like a Snow Crash reference) drifting a motorcycle up multiple eight story buildings and grappling hooking across the street, then dropping through the roof window of a gang complex in the middle of a war just to have someone sign for an amazon package. because why not.
All of the major characters seem to be anti-establishment criminals who will work to overthrow a government that over-regulates citizen behavior. There's an Akira slide in here too. Did I mention it was cyberpunk.
the aesthetic looks great to me. A lot going on in the character designs and their surroundings. Almost always something on screen that'll grab your attention. Animation wise, uses a lot of CG so it's not the most fluid. But it's not bad CG at least and doesn't stand out from the backgrounds, kinda works for the show.
and probably the best thing of all, it's
anime original. No manga, LN or VN. Nobody has any expectations and nobody knows what will happen. Will stick around to find out. Think everyone should give it a shot as the potential is there.
