For someone who is interested in the security, GRC, risk management space, would yall recommend cybersecurity or the network engineer degree? I’m assuming the latter. I make a fairly high salary now (almost 200k working in non-technical tech role w/no degree), but the no degree bit will always affect me when job searching IMO and I really want a government job :(
To be honest for a government job either one would be good.

You would probably need a Masters or PhD to make close to that amount working for the Government.
:mjlol:
And if Republicans gain power after the Election it's a wrap for Government workers.

I regularly peruse USAAJOBS and there were a few $130k+ BA/BS opportunities that I can live with. I’m in the legal and compliance space. No kids so I don’t mind taking a pay cut for the job stability. The trade off is worth it for me.

If you've never been cleared before your facing an uphill battle but not impossible.

People on here don't believe me. But the easiest path to a Federal job is working as a Federal contractor. I saw plenty leap frog more qualified applicants for coveted Government jobs. The hiring managers will just rig the process for them.

You don't need a degree to work in network engineering or security.

Grab a professional level cert. If you learn software engineering techniques you can break into FAANG without a degree as well.

Yeah I know I’m looking to get my CISSP within the next 6-8 months cause I already deal with SOC2/ISO stuff but I’ll always feel that not having a degree will be a way for employers to play you on salary and limit your choices, especially with how competitive and stingy the job market has become. I’d just feel more comfortable having all the certs + the degree. Unfortunately in America, it still means something.

I don't know what the fukk you're talking about at this point. Either do the thing or don't.

My brother mentioned something about getting into WGU and doing something in IT, for the people already doing/done it, is it conducive to finding an actual job in the industry? We're in middle of nowhere SC so not sure what job prospects would even look like for him since he hasn't expressed much of an interest in moving....

IMO get a little experience before starting courses. Experience is king in these streets

The Truth
Yep I got rejected from jobs because I didn't have Security+ , but I have a security clearance so that might factor into it a little bit

Security clearance and Security+ is the gateway

Also I got A+, Network+, and Project+, and all I've managed is one interview
Yeah I know, but I know they are offering more than a Sec+

You can literally just get Sec+ by yourself. Its a gatekeeper cert, most if those government recruiters don't know shyt about IT.

I didn't have a Sec+ either (used too, it lapsed) and I ended up getting TWO certs higher. Applied for a job, they wanted a minimum of Sec+. I said cool, I got this and this. These clowns literally tried to deny my resume off that.

I laughed at them on the phone. I said just those 2 certs alone are worth more and more difficult than any certification you got listed on this ad. They had to look it up and get back to me,

It be like that sometimes. Most these motherfukkers just looking for a checked box, they dont know shyt.

Reminded me of the CCNA. I have the CCENT, experience which switch/routing, and a couple other networking certs and-even took a verbal exam where they asked me some questions and only got one wrong because I didnt recognize some old ass protocol.

But I see them hiring idiots just because they got the cert, or giving idiots time to get it after hiring… first thing I said was once I get the cert what thinks Im going to work for you for that pay :mjlol:

They trying to hire these college kids with a cert because they can start them off with less money but them dudes find out how much they could make and bounce sometimes within months.

I should have clarified. Security+ is the most valuable for entry level
