Luckily, Spielberg felt “tremendous release” when he saw tears coming out of Sondheim’s eyes and was met with a hug: “It became one of the scariest days of my life and the best days of my life within seconds.” Sondheim “loved how we gave each song a long runway where the scene before the song sets up the song, not one or two words of dialogue that typically triggers the musical numbers in most of the stage productions,” Spielberg recalls. That wasn’t the only compliment, though. “He said, ‘Look, I know the show intimately. I didn't know what was going to happen next. That's not a criticism: You should be very happy.’ And I said, ‘Steve, thank you. I am.’ ”

This scene was created for the new version of the movie.

It’s a well-crafted movie, and a fine first musical entry from Spielberg. Them dance sequences were the strongest point for me and I couldn’t take my eyes off of Ariana DeBose. Wanted to like it way more than I did though, but for the life of me just couldn’t get into it. Not my kind of films and that’s okay.

All I know is that this is likely JJ Abrams’ favorite film of 2021. Felt like I got hit with the lens flare

Maria was a thot. Period. I feel like the dude that played Bernardo should have been nominated for an Oscar.

This was good, but I feel it's similarly as good/great as the OG.

I'm surprised there weren't more changes. I was thinking they'd do one of those modernized retro remakes, but it's pretty much another straight adaptation of the play.

The choreography is better than the OG, actual Puerto Ricans, NYC feels real and not a like stage set, some backstories now exist but overall the same.

I do think it should've ended with Somewhere being sung again...instead of the melody.
