They've admitted as much without directly saying it. Lurie had no intention of firing Doug this offseason, he never thought Doug would die on the hill of promoting from within after this disaster season.
I don't blame them for leaving no stone unturned - they never expected to be in this position, might as well exhaust all options.

So did Doug take the fall for the improved draft position or what? He had to. I find it VERY hard to believe he did that just to get Sudfield reps. And him taking all the blame but subsequently getting fired and still not snitching on Lurie?
Guess he figured that if he snitched and was told to tank for that 6th pick, he'd never get a job again.

Doug bombed his end of season interview so bad that he wanted to promote in house all the positions and the owner told him to come back with a better plan and when he wouldn't budge, Laurie fired him and they wasn't planning to be looking for a coach this off season

I have to blame Doug, one of the biggest factors in being a successful coach is the willingness to adapt and evolve. He wanted to double-down on Groh when that wasn't working, and wanted to do it again with Taylor.
Sean McVay was entering his 4th season, one season removed from a SB appearance, and he knew he had to reinvent his staff and inject new blood. That's why he went out and got Kevin O'Connell & Brandon Staley. Doug was entering his 6th season, 3 seasons removed from a SB appearance, and he refused to embrace that same reality.
As far as Doug overall, 10 years from now no one's gonna remember the 2020 season, but everyone's gonna remember that Super Bowl run and the brilliant job he did. The same people who show Andy love now hated his guts in 2012, time heals all wounds and reality always prevails.
