That boy Alex is dialed in and ready.
San Francisco 49ers – Niner Insider Blog – SFGate.com » Practice Report – Passing game looking good
Receivers and quarterbacks had a rousing time on the fourth day of padded practice for the 49ers. The team looked fresh during a rare morning practice after returning from an off-day.
There was a good half hour period when the ball never touched the ground.
Quarterbacks first threw passes to receivers running one-on-one patterns against a lone defensive back. Great battles ensued between wide receiver Randy Moss and cornerback Carlos Rogers and wide receiver Kyle Williams and cornerback Perrish Cox.
The ladder two have been impressive in training camp, picking up from the off-season program. Meanwhile, Moss made an outstanding catch while Rogers was draped all over him on a crossing route.
Rogers said after practice that Moss will push off every so slightly just before the ball arrives. “I have to get into him early,” Rogers said.
Alex Smith continues to look like the clear number one. He went a full hour before throwing an incompletion during the team scrimmage period. He lead rookie free agent wide receiver Nathan Palmer too far on a pass over the middle.
Back up quarterback Josh Johnson continues to struggle with accuracy, but that may improve when he knows the offense better. He’s the only quarterback who was not with the 49ers last year.
It’s often difficult to see when watching practice from the sidelines, but it does give you feeling of what quarterbacks have to deal with. In the middle of practice, the second-string offense went against the first team defense, and predictably, the defensive front seven overwhelmed the offensive line.
At times during Scott Tolzien’s reps, there was no way he knew where he was throwing the ball because his sight line was obscured. It caused him to misjudge a route on a pass that picked off by Culliver.
The other interception of the day came when a ball glanced off the hands of running back Frank Gore and then was picked off by safety Dashon Goldson, otherwise known as “the hawk.” Gore then turned around and plastered Goldson – the biggest hit of the day. It drew “Oooooh’s” from players.
Meanwhile, quarterback Colin Kaepnerick is still learning to harness his big arm. He blows his passes over the top of his receivers at times, particularly on seam routes over the middle.
Here are some other highlights and observations:
-
Kyle Williams made another diving grab. He is making it nearly impossible for the team to cut him.
-First-round rookie A.J. Jenkins continues to look tentative, although I’m openly rooting for him now because he handled the Jim Harbaugh situation so well. Harbaugh berated the media for suggested that Jenkins is a bust.
-Rogers broke up a long pass intended for Moss.
-Alex Smith threw a perfect home run ball to rookie free agent Brian Tyms.
-Former Stanford star Chris Owusu caught a deep touchdown pass from Colin Kaepernick. Owusu beat his man by 10 yards.
-Linebacker NaVorro Bowman had a loud breakup of a pass intended for Palmer.
-Cox broke up a pass intended for Owusu on a short comeback route.
-Linebacker Ahmad Brooks looked very good rushing the passer particularly against the second-string line.
