For the first time in 40 years the owners actually think they can beat the players union.
The power in a negotiation will always go towards the money. The players have money that will tide them over for years, but they also have expenses that will eat into that wealth like a tapeworm. The owners have wealth that they will be fine without lifting a finger. They didn't make their wealth through baseball, and will surely be ok without it. but the fans who love the game will suffer the most. So yes the owners can beat the players union, but to the detriment of killing the sport in the American market.
