If he proves worthy of that contract I’ll apologize.

That Lindor contract is awful. And right now Mets fans can smile in my face the same way Cubs fans got at me about Jason Hayward 6 years ago.

But we know how that ended.

:coffee:
just wondering. give me 3 contracts 7plus years that "worked out"

mlb contracts RARELY work out. not excusing Lindor, just saying context is important.

I'm watching. Terrible choice of teams, it's like if the NBA had an basketball movie they wanted to pay tribute to choosing the Magic - Pelicans as the teams with Zion not playing :scust:

These Field of dreams games should always be between two winning teams. I would have choose Dodgers - Mets due to all the star power (well for baseball standards at least) both teams have.
I like the idea of a winner stays on for the field of dreams game, so it should have been the White Sox vs somebody

Lindor isnt Heyward :beli:

The big contracts never actually meet "full value" except for a few rare cases but Lindor has played well at it hasn't prevented the Mets from spending more to make the team better around him. I'm not a big analytics guy but some of those numbers have him as a top shortstop this year so hes providing the value the Mets asked for. I feel like the first 3-4 years of those contracts is when they expect the production they paid for. After that you hope they dont fall off too bad.

I just think a guy like Lindor is worth it when you're trying to take your team to the next level. He wasnt going to do it alone but hes a durable player who plays good defense with above average offense at a premium positions. Add in hes very popular with fans which counts for the fanbase and front office :hubie:

So a couple of things...

This first post below was written November 21, 2021...

Interesting moves by the Mets on Starling Marte and Mark Canha.

But there are significant risks involved.

Mark Canha is a power threat and he can get on base. The problem is that he can't really hit consistently enough to the point where he's reliable. And he's a terrible defensive player. So you're hoping you get the career year he had in 2019, but that's looking more like an outlier than anything. That said, it's not like they are paying him a ton of money (reportedly 2 years, 26.5 million).

Starling Marte is a good player and he's fairly consistent. He can hit and he can steal bases. But he hits too many ground balls for my liking and he's not the most patient hitter at the plate. That he makes contact can be a big benefit -- if you have guys on base (especially Nimmo). But there's also the threat of the Mets looking at A LOT of double plays with this guy depending on where he bats in the lineup...especially as he's 33 years old...the bat speed starts to lag a bit. I'm just saying. It's possible it could go the wrong way.

I mean if you're looking at a heart of the lineup that has Lindor, Marte, Alonso, Canha...I can see the upside.

I'm not a fan of the Eduardo Escobar signing. I just don't think he's that good and I don't really know how he fits in this lineup other than he gives you some flexibility as far as Righty-Lefty goes.

I think it's fair to say I was right about everything here. Escobar is a bum.. Canha is decent but not great. And Marte even leads the Mets in double plays as of this writing with 13. :troll:

This 2nd post is what I wrote May 28, 2022.

Pete Alonso is a star player.

I bashed the hell out of that Francisco Lindor contract when it happened and let me say again...it is a horrible, HORRIBLE contract. That said, Lindor is still a productive player and still plays at a borderline all-star level.

Starling Marte is alright. I don't think he's "good". But if he gets hot and can steal some bases for you, you'll live with it.

It's a shame Conforto is out for the season because they really need that kind of bat. Maybe they can try to sign him next year.

JD Davis is probably a bit unlucky and I would expect his numbers to go up a little as things normalize. That said, the guy hits way too many ground balls so there's not much upside there.

Canha is okay. I mean he gets on base. I think ideally you'd rather have Canha at DH even with his lack of raw power and find someone else to play LF and drop Davis out of the lineup altogether.

Eduardo Escobar is probably playing himself out of the league at this point.

The rough part is that there isn't any real help they can expect from the Minors. Not this season, anyway.

The Mets have a strong lead in the NL East (30-17 as of this writing), so I know it seems silly for me to be so critical of the team. But things can change quickly in this game. The sooner Scherzer and deGrom can return, the better. And in a short series, those 2 pitchers can carry any team pretty far. I still think the roster needs work though. Just spitballing here but if they could get someone like Pham or Benintendi...that would solidify the lineup a lot better.
Again, this aged fairly well.

Both Benintendi and Pham were moved, though the Mets were never in consideration for either guy. Instead they wound up with Vogelbach -- who doesn't really replace Canha as a defender but takes over JD Davis at DH and he's a left handed power bat. Not great in my view, but he's off to a hot start nonetheless. In my view the Mets still have holes that can be exploited come Autumn.

But that's not really addressing your questions about Francisco Lindor. So here goes...
From a pure WAR perspective, Francisco Lindor is actually leading Major League Shortstops with 5.0 WAR (well, in Fangraph's version, anyway). WAR is a cumulative stat, meaning...the more you play, the more you produce. But 5 WAR is All-Star level and Lindor deserves credit for his play this season. Especially since he's been a plus defender this year. Is that the whole picture? No. He's overperformed his expected WOBA a bit and as far as the quality of his hitting contact, for my money I'd prefer Turner, Seager, Correa and maybe even Swanson and Adames -- not to mention Tatis and Franco who have both been hurt. But the fact is -- yes, Lindor has vastly outperformed his 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Do I think this is likely to continue? No.
I think in the next year or two, Lindor will continue to lose his ability to make hard contact, his defense will slip and he's already lost his value as a base stealer.

So I think the best case scenario here actually IS what happened with Jason Heyward and the Cubs. And that is...the Mets manage to ride a hot streak this October or next year, and win the World Series. And that will "justify" the Lindor contract for the moment. And by the time 2025 rolls around, Mets fans are sick to their stomachs, John from Ronkonkoma is losing his shyt on AM sports talk radio, and Billy Eppler is going through 3 bottles of Tums a day to hold back his indigestion, trying to figure out how to get the Angels to take Lindor off his hands.

You take and viewpoint is akin to my nephew whose in the 3 grade. Everytime we play a sports video game he stacks the deck with the popular player on one team and I destroy him in the game for it.

You sound like your still sitting on your goose eggs for 28 days. I don't go for this band wagon popular nonsense. I don't give a damn about Max Scherzer or Mookie Betts in the game . You don't need big names is my overall point.

If you are a fan of the sport you gonna watch. Just like you would sit on them eggs not knowing if all would make it to adult hood.

I don't know why I have to give you three. That seems to be an arbitrary and made up number.
But I can easily just say that no long contracts are really worth it.

But some are better than others.

Lindor got a 10 year deal and he won't make value for even 4 of those years.
At least when LAA gave Trout his money, he performs at MVP level. Kershaw performed at Cy Young level.

The Mets essentially paid 300 million dollars for no good reason.
You know that when the Mets traded for Lindor, they actually gave Cleveland Amed Rosario and Andres Gimenez. Now neither Rosario or Gimenez are stars. But I can argue that the Mets record in 2022 would be nearly the same with Rosario or Gimenez as it currently is with Lindor.

The problem is that they're only there for a game and then they go back to their home stadium. It would be a pain in the ass for either team to go back and play the rest of the series out (and in this case, the Mets would lose a home game that you don't wanna lose because this year, it would be a major sellout in Queens.)

For anyone who might have thought that Nolan Arenado was a creation of Coors Field,

He's hitting .304/.371/.561 with 23 HR.
His 56 runs scored and 71 RBI might seem underwhelming, but his adjusted runs created is the highest of his career at 160.

This is probably his career year and it's doubtful he repeats this, but it's impressive nonetheless.

He's probably the NL MVP if I had a vote.
My guess is that Paul Goldschmidt takes it -- and he's having a fantastic season too.

why do the Yankees still have that ridiculous no facial hair rule?
Because its how a baseball player is supposed to look :mjpls:

Mets are looking forreal, may be the true king of the city. I do think once Stanton comes back, Yankees will be fine
