Some points to ponder
Info and opinions are often more palatable after a loss, or at least more believable, but the validity doesn't necessarily change. The program that lost to TCU and ISU also beat OU and KSU. Week to week brow beating serves no purpose. OU doesn't mean "Strong never lost the locker room" just as much as TCU means he does. But there are huge problems to overcome and for Strong, many are self inflicted.
Some points to ponder:
- The lockerroom was in extreme disarray before the OU game. Did Strong lose the team? No, that win speaks for itself. Is the problem fixed? Nope, but things are better now than they were. That tells you how up and down, weeks to week this whole thing is.
- Strong can't mortgage his 2016 on Norvell/Traylor and I have reason to believe Perrin will be involved in the OC search to ensure Texas explores all options. No names at this point, but assume UT will hire an up and comer with recent success, as opposed to a retread. Before this game I was on the fence regarding the Co-OC's. That's no longer the case no matter what happens from here on out. 0 points in Ames. That's like not getting laid in a bar filled with recent divorcees. It just can't be allowed to happen.
- Before this week there was fear Heard wasn't the long term answer. I didn't necessarily buy it but I should have beaten that drum louder. Like I said, info isn't often palatable. I guess I thought they'd run the ball well enough and often enough for Heard to be the guy. How bad is his passing? I had one Big 12 coach ask me what percentage of practice is spent with him actually throwing. Not ideal.
- Strong to Miami talk will only get louder. They want him but can't afford his salary or buyout. If a rich group were to emerge and offer buyout money it would also be in conjunction with a soft landing. Why am I stating this? Because this discussion will emerge at some point. In no way am I in favor of replacing Strong at this time but keep in mind I'm often too resolute in my evaluations. I don't care about making decisions based on political fallout (plus JG is already on the side who wants him gone so replacing him isn't racist you guys) but I do care about doing what's right. 24 months isn't a fair amount.
- I don't like this team. Youth and inexperience is no excuse on any level to not show up for a game. That's on the coaches but the players are just as much to blame. When I was 18-19 years old I showed up to work every day and busted my d***. That's not some old man s*** walking uphill both ways in the snow, it's about work ethic and accountability. It's about competing and I didn't need my boss to explain it to me or motivate me. The younger guys need to buckle their chin strap. The team is about more than what happens on the field in plain view.
- Strong, man, I love him but he hamstrung himself from the start and his offensive blind spot could keep him from becoming truly accomplished. I often think back to what a former coach of his shared, "we'd be in the film room watching practice footage and he would get hyped up watching the defense beat up the offense. I was wondering if he realized both sides were his team." Not ideal.
None of it's ideal.
