Nahlin just put out this update on the program:
Looks like @dtownreppin214 gonna get his wish of Andre Coleman being bushed as WR Coach.
Some Saturday program thoughts and notes
Yesterday’s win over Kansas State may turn out to be meaningless in the long run, but I really did not want to cover an offseason in which a continued losing streak is still the focus. The difference between 4-8 and 5-7 isn’t great — only one by my count — but the difference between losing the last seven in a row and winning the last game has me feeling a little better about things.
It would have been easy for that team to roll over and give up yesterday — especially given the injuries on top of the losing streak — but it didn’t.
Iowa State proved to be an outlier performance from an effort standpoint. I give the staff and most players credit for gutting through a rough season and coming out on top versus a solid Kansas State team to end the season. Hopefully they’ll be better for it.
At 5-7, clearly there is a ton of work ahead of Steve Sarkisian. Every aspect of the program needs to be evaluated, and some changes need to be made.
The Staff
IT has heard there will be changes. Plural. At this point, IT does not know exactly how that will unfold.
We don’t know anyone who expects wide receivers coach Andre Coleman to return. We believe Sark has made some calls regarding the potential vacancy. To be clear, we haven’t heard to a level where we’d report Coleman will be ousted.
We know many on the board wish Texas would hire supposed recruiting deity Ra’Shaad Samples, but the coaching market isn’t nearly as hot on him as the recruitnik market. Everybody wants to recruit DFW and still his best options have been SMU and TCU. Basically his best option has been Sonny Dykes. I think he has it in him to be a good coach but he’s not there yet. We know Sark prioritizes coaching ability which is why he went with Coleman in the first place — well, that and he missed on some other guys.
If a move is made, where would Sark turn? We don’t have that answer and we’re not sure of timing either. It wouldn’t be prudent to go into NSD without a wide receiver coach while Evan Stewart remains the top target on the board. Bloodthirsty people don’t account for things like that, even if we just saw it bite Tom Herman in the *** with Quentin Johnston. But hey, at least Herman fired someone immediately after the season!
On defense, IT has heard every option is on the table. This may take a while to play out because any move would come with significant trade-offs. Fans don’t typically account for those trade-offs. Fans fear the worst — Sark‘s complacent! The AD is complacent! Nothing is happening! — rather than acknowledging these are rational actors, who at a minimum possess much more rationale than fans (short for fanatics) on top of possessing much more information. That last part is key. We don’t know who they’ve contacted, what their timing or recruiting considerations are, etc.
I would let things play out. How many people worked themselves into a frenzy last year over Herman returning? This incarnation of Texas wants to win as much, or more, than any other in your lifetime and they will continue to prove it.
New Personnel
We’ll probably hit on NIL in the Scoop, but it’s important for fans to realize part of the reason UT is in it for elite recruits despite the season is because of perceived earning potential. Football of course remains a major consideration, but the chance to make money factors in as well. Because of that, it’s harder to read recruiting tea leaves. You probably won’t see us drop percentages on the elite targets because of this.
What we’re seeing with the staff is hesitance to move on from priority high school targets. That’s both a good sign of what they think their chances are to land some of those guys, but also a sign of their confidence they can use the scholarship on a portal player rather than reaching for a lesser high school recruit.
Parts of the puzzle are difficult to put together because we’re missing some key pieces, but the pieces we do have leads us to believe Texas will be successful in the portal. This harkens back to what was said in the Humidor on Friday. Sark doesn’t care if you started, if he can upgrade a position, even one with a decent starter, he will.
We expect offense to be the priority of the portal, though they would take best player available on defense. A guy like Elias Ricks would be a no-brainer addition as a plug and play corner.
Credit Sark for not dancing around the QB portal question, but really he can’t afford to. He needs to message to his current players and recruits alike that he will get better quarterback play.
