Some stuff I know:
Some of the SEC transfers in this offseason were utterly disgusted with the approach that the players already here took to offseason practice and S&C. Said that players in the SEC approach the game and season with a completely different intensity and the players here were mostly just having a good time. Said the coaches who came from the SEC were similarly surprised and disappointed.
After spring practice the coaches were not bullish on the talent left on the roster.
The coaches were extremely excited about Hudson Card, but noted he was late with his throws and often held the ball too long and took sacks.
I thought we were an 8 win team, but that’s partially because I didn’t predict Baylor improving. I thought that because I predicted difficulty at QB (although no one expects the Spanish Inquisition), continued underperformance at TE, bad WRs, bad linebackers, and an average at best OL. I expected more of the defense, but clearly I got that wrong too. For the most part, except Baylor, its gone more or less as expected.
Some stuff I think I know:
As a group, the WRs were viewed as shockingly low on talent and the most probable group targeted for roster turnover. I suspect we will also have a new WR coach next season.
S&C is not magical. You get out of it what you put in. Maybe the new regime isn’t any good, more likely 95% of what they do is the same **** every S&C program anywhere does and the players who haven’t responded aren’t self starters like the staff is used to.
The majority of the roster enjoys being at Texas and in Austin more than it enjoys working extremely hard year round to maximize performance in games.
Guys who previously coached at Alabama are used to players not needing a lot of external motivation. Alabama players are trying to go to the NFL and know that there are 5 stars behind them who will happily perform in their place. For this regime to work, this staff is going to have to recognize we don’t have guys with that same internal motivation, we have guys who worked hard (sometimes) for Herman due to fear or prodding. Going to have to figure out a way to improve that.
Some stuff no one knows:
If 2022 is going to be any better/different, we are going to have to find an edge rusher or two, at least one starting safety, at least one starting linebacker, at least two starting WRs, several pieces on the OL and, most importantly, a quarterback. Most of that is going to have to be addressed in the portal. I don’t know if we can do that.
The staff is going to have to do a hard internal evaluation about how it sets out motivating this team. These second half swan songs are not capacity, they are intensity and desire. I don’t know if they can do that, but Sark needs to hire an ******* somewhere.
They need to add someone with Texas high school ties. Baylor got good on that. Traylor has made hay on that. We don’t have that and I don’t know where we get that.
I’m not convinced that they can figure out how to adjust with the lower level of talent we have. With Herman, we wanted big boy coaches. Now we have big boy coaches who want players who can’t do what they ask. Different disconnect, same result. Unsure these guys will get there.
We’re going to have nail evaluations because money isn’t a differentiator anymore. Everyone does NIL. We aren’t unique. I don’t know if these guys have that in them or not.
