Mondays In the Humidor with The Big Cigar
2/16/15 By: Jesus Shuttlesworth
In this Valentine’s edition of Monday’s in the Humidor we’re throwing bouquets and breaking hearts with depth chart madness you can’t get anywhere else. As a “can’t get it anywhere else” aside, if you haven’t picked up the Inside Texas Firemen’s calendar, you’ll want to spend the $5.95 for March and April alone for Ian Boyd and Justin Wells’ ode to 50 Shades of Gray. If you’ve felt the bondage that is the Texas quarterback position, you’ll enjoy the catharsis. The Cigar also walks us through what is going on with the overall tenor of the team. If you compare what’s going on now with the purge from 2014, it’s easy to see that love is in the air on the 40 Acres. Finally, the Hoops Cigar will tell us if Rick Barnes’ recent win streak means a renewal of vows or simply amounts to unrequited love with Steve Patterson looking over Texas’ body of work. Love may be patient and kind, but here Texas fans want to go home with the prom queen, with a bottle of scotch — especially those inside the Humidor.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: So the Valentine’s Day bit must be good for you. You buy a $3,000.00 Louis Vuitton for the wife and you take your mistress to Barbados. Who could mess that up?
Big Cigar: I’m not married anymore but I had a good holiday, thank you very much.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Was it as Charlie Sheen posited — “you don’t pay them for sex, you pay them to leave” sort of thing?
Big Cigar: Ha. No, I have a good gal and I’m pretty happy, thank you very much. Let’s talk football though.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Just joking. Yeah let’s get right to it. First, let’s start with your thoughts on winter camp thus far and how it compares with what was going on this time in 2014.
Big Cigar: The biggest difference as far as I can tell is that the staff isn’t really interested in proactively trying to run players off. I mean, they’re making the players work hard and they’re holding everyone accountable, but they’re not actively rooting for attrition like they were last season. They really hated who they inherited in 2014 and I’m not sure they wouldn’t have preferred more players quitting than did so by the end of spring that season. They really loathed that football team and you could see it basically the entire season. I guess the one thing I can say with certainty is that they like the 2015 squad much better.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Is that saying a whole lot?
Big Cigar: Ha. Maybe not, but the truth is they feel this group is much closer to the makeup and embodiment of their ideal football team than the 2014 version. Hopefully that translates to more wins.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: How are the new coaches being received? I’m told today was their first official day on the job.
Big Cigar: The position groups seem impressed with the new coaches - Traylor clearly gave up a great situation in Gilmer to take this job but he’s already impressed the players and his peer group of coaches. The new WR coach is very well received I’m told - he is already demonstrating distinct differences in how he will be coaching the WRs and it seems obvious that his way of teaching the position is going to be in sharp contrast to how the position was taught under Coach K.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: What’s the main difference there?
Big Cigar: Just the fact that he’s more patient with the players in his group from top to bottom. There was preferential treatment for some of the wide receivers last season and the players picked up on that whether they were the victim or the beneficiary of the treatment. That’s no way to build a healthy culture so good on Charlie for addressing the issue. I’m pleased so far with how things are going based on what I’ve been told.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Great stuff about the overall attitude change and the new coaching hires. Let’s move on to depth charts on who’s taking the reins at various positions.
Big Cigar: Well, as always we have to preface winter depth chart talk by acknowledging that there are no pads and therefore there isn’t real football being played. That said, I was taken aback by Strong’s announcement to start the winter session. He said that ALL 22 spots were up for grabs and that incoming freshman would be given every opportunity to win or take a job from an upper classman.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: How did that sit with the returning players?
Big Cigar: It certainly got their attention. Everyone seems to be working much harder and going to 6th street much less than they did in 2014. I’d have to say that Charlie’s threats aren’t being treated as idle threats to the extent they were last season. I think the message is loud and clear at this point. Put in the work or pay the consequences by losing your job or being run into oblivion.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Or run into Bolivia — as Mike Tyson would say.
Big Cigar: Yeah, however you want to describe it. The kids know that this is a true competition for snaps, and they seem to be attacking the opportunity accordingly which benefits the team I would think.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Let’s get down to actual depth charts based on the drills being run. Strong’s all about his defense so let’s start there. Who’s running 1st team on the defensive line?
Big Cigar: Right now you have Paul Boyette and Hassan Ridgeway manning the defensive tackle spots. At defensive end, Shiro has the inside track on the strong-side defensive end position, while Bryce Cottrell and Naashon Hughes battle it out for the FOX position.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Weird. Shiro doesn’t strike me as an MSNBC guy. But he’s playing well?
Big Cigar: Yeah, the kid’s disciplined. He’ll be in the military this time next season if the NFL doesn’t work out. The kid is dedicated.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Let’s move on to linebacker. It sounds like the reports of their demise has been greatly exaggerated?
Big Cigar: I would say so. I love the potential of this 1st group as long as the kids live up to their end of the bargain. Right now you have Jinkens as the weak side linebacker and he’ll be tasked with playing clean up not unlike what Jordan Hicks was asked to do last season. Jinkens is trying to get more flexible but this spot will allow him to play more assignment football and make the more routine plays. At middle linebacker, you have Dalton Santos running 1st team. In my mind, he’s a luxury if you’re playing a downhill running attack in this conference. He’ll probably come out in nickel packages at this point but he can be a physical force in the run game or wide receiver screen game.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Uggh. I’m not sold on this unit just yet?
Big Cigar: For me, I’m excited about this group for one reason; I’m fired up that Malik Jefferson is running 1st team as the SAM linebacker. This means he’ll have a package as a pass rusher, while also being given contain and flat coverage responsibilities. The kid is long, athletic, and can run like a deer so this is perfect for his skillset. It’s also refreshing that the coaches are already giving a true frosh a huge role on this squad. Get the talent on the field!
Jesus Shuttlesworth: I like it. I remember the Bull Reese staff doing the same with Kalen Thornton. I think this movie ends much better with an uber-athlete like Jefferson given all of these responsibilities. I’m not much a of a movie guy, but I’d say the Bull Reese model is akin to casting Kelly McGillis in Top Gun instead of an actual hot chick. Not to say Malik’s a hot chick but you get the analogy, especially in light of Valentine’s day. Malik can actually pull it off. That’s an athletic dude.
Big Cigar: Yeah, no, not sure about that exact analogy but he’s a much better option out there in space than someone like Kalen.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: I don’t know, the girl from Breakin’ was hotter than McGillis but whatever, it’s just a comparison. Let’s move on to the secondary. What’s going on?
Big Cigar: Right now you’ve got Duke, Haines, and Colbert running almost all of the 1st team snaps. At the last corner spot, it’s a battle between Bryson Echols and Jermaine Roberts. I suspect the loser of that battle gets to run the nickel spot. I don’t know what movie you’d compare that to but there are some athletes in that 1st team. Keep in mind that the coaches will give the true frosh a look here, so this unit could see some changes given the talent coming in later this year. The defense looks to be pretty solid all things considered.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Let’s move on to the offense and who’s running 1st team. Of course the QB position is what everyone wants to talk about. What’s the story?
Big Cigar: Heard and Swoopes are running neck and neck at this stage of the game. I’m told that the snaps favor Heard at this point, so it almost seems like the coaches feel he’s the leader currently. Again, with no pads it’s tough to tell, but Heard seems to have the inside track currently.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: What about running back?
Big Cigar: With Catalon dinged with an injury, it looks like Gray with the majority of 1st team snaps. Again, the frosh loom large.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: What about wide receiver?
Big Cigar: So far it seems that Lorenzo Joe, Dorian Leonard, Armanti Foreman, and Marcus Johnson alternate between 1st and 2nd teamers depending on formation. The surprise of this unit based on those who would know is Leonard. He keeps making plays that no one else on the team can make and the coaches are raving about him. I’d be surprised if Leonard doesn’t have a breakout year next season from all indications early on.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: One last unit, the OL. What’s the story?
Big Cigar: The big news considering pads aren’t on yet is the transfers. The OL coach thinks he’s infused a big upgrade in talent and athletic ability to the mix based on early returns. If this translates to good play once the pads go on, then Wick feels good about his chances to have an improved unit next season. In fact, I’d say the OL group is the pleasant surprise of winter camp.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Thanks.
Big Cigar: You bet.
Finally, we’ll switch gears to what’s going on with the men’s hoops team. A lot of readers have asked about the recent win streak and what that does for Rick Barnes’ chances at survival. Here’s what the Hoops Cigar says…
Hoops Cigar: The last couple of wins were not only expected, but it allowed Barnes to avoid a midseason firing.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Texas doesn’t do midseason firings, though.
Hoops Cigar: I can tell you that was something that was being batted around. I know Texas doesn’t do a lot of things, but firing Barnes was a topic of conversation more than a week ago. Whether or not the AD would have pulled the trigger is another matter, but Barnes has very few friends in the athletic department, and certainly not enough friends to keep his job safe had disaster struck. Optics or not optics, the football program is no longer a big enough distraction to keep Barnes safe. He doesn’t have the cover to survive losing to Texas Tech.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: So handicap his chances of survival.
Hoops Cigar: Lunardi has him as a 7 seed going into the tournament so he’ll likely face a solid 10 seeded mid-major in the opening round. He’d better pray for an overrated high-major instead. Getting past that, his club will need to beat a 3 seed if he wants to get to the second weekend. From everything I’ve been told, a trip to the second weekend is the bare minimum Barnes needs to keep his job. You do the math.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: I will. Thanks.
Hoops Cigar: You bet.
