yo when you really sit back and think about it vito had the illest road to riches story of any fictitious character ever. cats wanna talk about weak ass tony montana and his rise to power like it was crazy but that nicca Vito had mad heart.

- grew up in sicily and witnessed the death of his father, brother, AND mother by Don Ciccio
- hides from Ciccio, manages to escape to america BY HIMSELF while hes like 12 years old
- makes an honest living with Genco in NY. gets extorted by Fanucci
- teams up wit Clemenza and Tessio, learns to do favors for others in return for loyalty. which is trait that helps him immensely later in life.
- comes up with a plan to murk Fanucci, carries out hit solo, meanwhile gaining the respect of the neighborhood
- starts an olive oil importing business wit Genco and uses it for a legal front for his growing criminal enterprise which becomes the most powerful crime family in the nation
- goes back to italy to avenge his familiy's deaths

i mean whats not to like about that? this nicca CAME UP.

Plus, times had changed so much between Vito and Michael.

The area Vito started from and worked almost his whole life were from a time where people knew each other, they lived worked and shopped within a few miles. Don Vito could pull strings in his community. He ran it like a king.

By Michaels time the stage had changed, people had more and moved from the old places. Old friends had moved up and out and new people took their places in the old areas. Times had changes and Michael was no longer big in the old community his father once ran and was so well known for.

An example of the contrast can be seen in the way Vito and Michael treated Johnny Fontaine (Singer). Vito saw Johnny as an errant Godson. When his services were needed to get him out of the bandleader contract or into the movie, he gladly provided them, and while Johnny knew he owed the Corleones,

Vito never really pressed him. When Johnny showed up at the wedding Vito told him to spent time with his family (and dump the woman he took from Woltz) and to get some rest and to eat becaue he looked terrible.

When Michaell met up with Johnny in Vegas, he got rid of the women in the room not because he cared that Johnny was not a family man, but because he had business to do, namely to get Johnny to repay the debt to the Corleones but agreeing to play Vegas so many times a year and to ersuade his Hollywood friends to do likewise. Of course at that point Vito was still alive so the "favor" Johnny did was offset by lucrative contracts to perform, and thus only enhanced him in Showbiz. In GF3 Johnny is no longer of any use to Michael, and when he performs at the party Michael mocks him by telling him he is leaving the live performance to go listen to Tony Bennett records. Vito would have never acted like that.

Vito is probably the deepest "gangster" character though in fiction..... with just his backstory and rise to power....

what other fictional gangster really has the depth of vito

I liked Vito because he was loved, respected as well as feared. Mike was feared and respected but it didn't seem like the love was always there.

Michael did everything for family. I'll always respect that character trait.

I'll never forgive him for having Fredo murked tho. And he waited till his moms passed too smh.

"I know it was you Fredo...you broke my heart"

that's what gives him the W IMO. The family needed a cold hard hand during his reign.

the way he closed that door in his wife's face :wow:

Big factor: Vito, unlike Michael, was not obsessed with being publicly "legitimate." Vito's legitimacy came from the respect he earned from people he helped, and from the politicians and judges he influenced. He kept an ultra-low profile; and when he acted ruthlessly, he was able to hide his hand with relative ease.

Agree 100%.

Vito did have a legit front, and they had honest money and influence. He had enough influence to where
(even if tacitly) his enemies knew they had to see him and ask to bring other chit into their hood.

You could tell what he was about when he asked cuzz about Don Fanucci: "He is Italian? Why does he
bother Italians? He knows they have no one to help them..."

I always think about what Sonny would've said or did to Mike for that one

When you watch Part 3, there's a piece in there where Michael is talking with Connie...and Connie said something to the effect
that she believed that Fredo died in a drowning accident after all that time. Mike kept that on the super low. LOL
