The thing about a life of crime is that the GOAL should always be to turn the blood money into legit money and that should be the END of it. You don't keep it going like Michael did..like Pablo Escobar did. You get the fukk out when you are rich enough and you have frustrated the Feds enough. That's it. Go the Industrialist route and get the fukk out. It can only end in disaster or death. You can't keep being a WHITE COLLAR criminal and getting away with it with technology increasing and someone always being hungry for what's yours. It doesn't work.

I guess that is how the Kennedys did it with Joesph Kennedy Sr.

Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. - Wikipedia.

Michael also went against the family by killing his own brother. I'm surprised that hardly ever gets brought up in conversations about The Godfather: Part 2.
Well fredo was looking for a power grab himself, can you blame him for killing him?

He should of did it himself though, that was personal.

Fredo wasn’t part of the family anymore following his berayal, and michael made that VERY clear in lake tahoe. Fredo lied to the don of the family and conspired with hyman roth and johnny ola to have him killed, knowingly or not.

Michael was better primarily because vito made bad decisions which led to him getting shot, started a war, his son’s face crushed, and by extension Sonny killed. He should have done the deal with Sollozzo as a silent partner, and eventually cut out tagtallia and Barzini. But, instead he favored his political influence further making them jealous, started a war, got shot, etc.

Michael would’ve agreed to the deal, and eventually usurped barzini and tagtallia and worked directly with the turk or bought him out all together and or killed him. He did it to moe green.

Godfather 3 showed exactly how good michael was as a leader. He brokered a *$600 million dollar* real estate deal, and bought out THE VATICAN. He found a rightful successor, and had his last enemy taken out by his nephew. He was better than vito becuase of his ruthlessness and ability to see steps ahead.

This is the correct answer. Michael was the better leader, but as the movies progress his relationships with each member of his family slowly decline.
He knew it too. The last conversation with his mother about losing his family is forgotten about one of the best scenes in the series.

I wish they showed this deleted scene. Vito is the better Don.

Vito was playing chess while the other heads of the 5 families played checkers.

He knew it would make the family look weak not getting revenge. However he took the time to prepare Mike who they would not see coming to get revenge for Sonny.

Vito was the better Don, Part 2 showed us this, Mike took the family to the greater heights but lost everything including the family in the process

…And so the debate becomes this: Who of the two was really “legit”?

Vito was legit in his own way - at the street level, he was trying to run a clean operation (so to speak) and help his peeps.
Michael made the outfit legit on the business level - but it was dingy as fucc underneath

I suppose everyone has to decide for themselves which was more important
