A Different World is an American sitcom television series and a spin-off of The Cosby Show. It aired for six seasons on NBC from September 24, 1987, to July 9, 1993.

I was watching NBC.

How you feel about Family Matters is how I feel about A Different World

A Different World was a peak into HBCU life. So I found it interesting to see. By the time it came out, my grandmother had already suggested that I go to Morehouse once I graduated. Before that point, I was thinking about going to UCLA or USC (Cali version, not the Carolina one). The show was not the main thing that influenced me to go, but it did not hurt seeing a show about Black college students at a time when I was making a decision on where I would go.

True I can understand that perspective, the show did help for the Black youth to go to college. But for me A Different World felt like one really really long informercial on how College is awesome lol

First of all, the theme music is so trash. It just primes you for a mid show. FM is supposed to be a black show…where the bass and funk???

Jalel White had a really big ego, but the show wouldn’t have lasted past two seasons without him. The storylines were cringey and the characters were boring and uninteresting outside of Urkel. The black full house. No swag

All sitcoms age badly. Even the goats. The last season of Martin was unwatchable. So it’s not surprising FM aged like sour cream towards the end.

Plus it was ridiculous having a grown man act like some spazzy 13 year old, who had an unrequited crush going on 10 years.

Jaleel White had an ego but can you blame him. That show gets cancelled without him he is reason for the show making it to syndication. The show was suppose to be like The Cosby Show but writers had a vision and boom here we are. Imo The show peaked once he turned into Stefan, that was creative you have to admit. But adding Waldo,Weasel and Myrtle Urkel stuff nah.

Dope mini-docseries
And Jaleel was out of pocket
Wouldn’t be surprised if it was him who got Jamiee fired

I heard that they had to pay him more since he was the show and she was a casualty as a result.

Don't let revisionist history fool you. The show never cared about Judy. She had 0 A plots and only like 2 or 3 total plots at all. When she was jealous of Richie, when she refused to read a book for a report and when she ruined Harriet's dress. She added nothing to the show that Laura and Richie already didn't cover. The perfect end to the show was season 7, Steve and Stefan became separate people giving Laura and Myra their boyfriends. No more love square. Everybody is happy. End with Urkel moving out of the Winslow house and into Myra's apartment while Laura moves to Paris with Stefan. Have Richie move in with his mom back in Detroit while Harriet and Carl relax, finally having an empty nest. Or, if you want to keep a wacky ending, have Steve and Myra move back into his house next door so they can continue to bug Carl.

Thats why they dumped her ass...she was expendable. Urkel pretty much took all the oxygen from all of the side characters. And they all ended up leaving.

No show that is still profitable is gonna end unless the star leaves. Big Bang would still be on if Parsons was down. Cosby coulda went 10/11 years if Bill wanted to. Seinfeld walked away from 100Ms.

That square wasnt done. Urkel never stopped loving Laura. He was biding his time with Myra...he wasn't done.

Steve was literally 12 when the show started and it ended when he was 21. And when the show ended he was pretending to be in college.

Judy got fired cause her mom was a drama queen and before fm even turned into the urkel show her mom was making all types of demands for more lines and more screen time.

The reason family matters because the urkel show is because they filmed in front of a live studio audience and when he was on stage, the crowd went wild and laughed their asses off and clapped harder than they ever did, week after week. There was no vision from the writers or staff, they saw an opportunity and struck gold. Literal lightning in a bottle.
