Most jobs have requirements. That's like saying being the president is like being a slave since you have obligations.
NBA players opinions on the outside world ain't worth a damn majority of the rime

Most of these hoopers NEVER had jobs outside of playing basketball

They don't enter the real world until damn near 40 and by that time they're so rich everything is on easy mode

well, NBA players can always leave the NBA if they want to, but I understand what he's saying. Most people take the word "slave" as meaning one thing, but it's deeper than that. There are so many stipulations in an NBA contract and they require so much of your time, that they really do own you. You get fined for:

skipping morning shootarounds
pre-gram shootarounds
interviews
not giving long enough answers during interviews
saying the wrong words during interviews
taking a picture with guns
posting movies on social media
saying "stop snitching"

They really own you in the NBA. But they are paid very well for it. Players really don't be having a lot of free time like that during the season. Guys like Kareem changed a lot of shyt in the 80s by refusing to give interviews.
I dont think this is true at all, they have tons of down time as I understand (these guys take naps during the middle of the day lol). The thing is they travel a ton, and a lot of the "free" time is on the road. So being away from home is definitely a challenge --- but they also get 3-4 months a year (prime summer months at that) to use as they see fit

and those other things are just job obligations no? If I started blowing off meetings, not showing up to the office or acting erratically around coworkers or customers, I think my job would be doing something about that too

trust me, players value days off of practice. I know a few dudes that have been in the NBA and playing there now. I remember an interview talking about Iverson being offered He got Game and there was talk of him saying, "I'm not going to work my first summer having money" or something like that lol. So yes, they make a LOT, but it's not just games and home. They have a LOT of obligations. It comes with the check. Your job doesn't have morning obligations on work days, you go to work and then post work obligations like hanging out to give interviews and then if you have a great performance at work and the game is on TNT, you have to stick around and talk to the TNT crew. BUT, as we all have stated, they are paid lovely for it
