They are taking a sample and matching it up against THEIR OWN DATABASE.

I don't know if they have a db of all these random followers, I'm just saying the query limit is not limiting the application because if you had to send a new query for each follower you still couldn't analyze 500 of them

There's a database of accounts they already have but surely they do something for new accounts and so forth

So just cause Akademics made a twitter app once and bumped up against that limitation doesn't mean there aren't various ways to get around it using different API calls, different data providers, caching and all that

So a sample of 500 followers of someone that might have 5 million is accurate to you? :yeshrug:

thats for people in the millions; how many people have over a million followers?

20-50?

for the rest of the people that make up the millions...its pretty accurate.

Still cool to me.

But who do you care about with these tools though?

You care about ppl with 3 million followers. If your checking with your friends to me its completely acceptable. You can check to see if they "bought" followers. But to check on actual celebs. Holds no weight.

Statistics is a very complex field friend

For starters you dont know that this thing isn't constantly scanning users

Or if they have more than one access point scanning.... couple of computers, all of a sudden you have 35000 searches per hour

And being that people's activity habits don't change super quick 99% of the time, data that is a week or two old is still valid... I am pretty sure they didnt claim the data was live, which blows your whole theory out the window

*EDIT* Term I was lookign for was "confidence interval"... you could come up with a reasonable picture of an set of unknown size based on a relatively small # of samples... in other words you combine search algorithms, 350 followers could very well be enough to paint a reasonable picture of someone with a million followers

Plus each of those 350 followers follow other people... you can see patterns emerging

Why you dont want this to work I dont know but the fact that you threw out "I wrote a Twitter app" sounds like insecurity

They are doing it through their own database. You can google 'get twitter followers' and pay 9 bucks to get their entire 'list' if you were going to start one of these sites if they really wanted to.

You are right, there is different ways to do it, and im sure it is being done through a database that they maintain. Plus really if they setup multiple virtual servers on different IPs they could get around the limit per user/per ip.

Breh theres less than 20 people who have that many followers so why you trying to argue extremes here? Do you think we can't see that you are trying to muddy up the water here?

I don't understand why you care so much if this is accurate for Justin Bieber when really the reason this thread was made, and it was stated in the first post, was to check on non famous people faking the funk. Like no name rappers tweeting everyone and their mother links to their hot garbage song with 50k followers.
