But sports IS entertainment.

That outlining of ethical journalism you posted earlier, is oriented towards news gathering which affect peoples lives, public policy, foreign policy, etc --- weighty issues. There is a reason why sports-journalism is a hyphenated term. They arent one in the same.

Thats not to suggest that sports journalism should permit clear unethical behavior like lying and misrepresentation, but sports is by nature entertainment so our baseline starts there.

Then he needs to say that it is and stop covering himself in a journalists garb.

Does sports journalism in the NY Times reflect what he does? Would you put him in the same category are Will Rhoden?

Sure. Ive seen Rhoden on the old Sports reporters show offering his opinion. That didnt denote that he was abandoning his sports-journalist wares.

He offered his opinion without speaking over someone else.

He offered his opinion without it being a license to be arrogant.

Rhoden offers opinions while being sensitive to inexperienced sources or subjects.

These are things Stephen A does not do.

Their approaches are different, but they are one and the same, and playing the same game. They obviously have different views on civility --- but you see who is the more successful one --- thats just capitalism 101.

Also, when we talk about arrogance, we cant confuse reporting on federal funding for social safety nets, or preconditions for military intervention, with reporting and discussing Mark Sanchez going 6-29, or whether Danillo Gallinari is overpaid. Sports is entertainment, and is a distraction from real life.

If you really buy into the animation and bravado he displays on a show designed to stimulate debate by accentuating a polemic and are using that to write him off as arrogant or whatever (as if arrogance disqualifies you from being a journalist :heh:), then I'm afraid your attitude to what you see on TV is at least a little naive.

Do you really think that he and Skip are genuinely diametrically opposed on all these issues that they go at each other about? Of course not but in the process of passionately arguing two sides of an argument they impart knowledge about that issue and help inform or stimulate public opinion on it.

Whether it appeals to you or not, that is journalism.

Not only that, but you haven't applied the criteria correctly. Not adhering to the standard of ethical practices wouldn't mean he's not a journalist, that would just make him a 'bad' journalist.

Buy into it? That act is completely manufactured.

Are you talking to yourself now believing I feel they're being genuine?

It's all an act....it's not journalism.....it's an act...

And journalism can't be an act?

When a news anchor interviews an expert in a particular field and engages them in debate seeking to contradict and point out flaws in their stance or test their knowledge, do you think that gives us any idea whether or not they genuinely disagree with what that expert is trying to say?

Of course not but in the process of dramatising debate, both sides illustrate the problems surrounding an issue and people are given a more balanced appraisal of the circumstances surrounding the issue.

In fact a lot of what we process as journalism is an act that we unconsciously attribute an air of legitimacy to in order to match the potential gravity of what it is we're being told. We generally don't consider the fact that people delivering the news do so in a manner that doesn't reflect their normal modes of discourse.

At any rate I think these days we put too much emphasis on how things are being said and don't pay enough mind to what the content itself has to offer.

But he goes up there touting his journalistic pedigree as if what he does on First Take represents journalism.

It DOESNT. That's WWF.

So what you are saying is that he's Mongo McMichael or Kevin Greene or LT or dare I say Goldberg? :leon:

His journalistic prowess is the reason he is in the position he's in however what he's doing now most certainly isn't journalism.

He plays both sides of the fence. He plays the entertainment angle but the moment someone questions him he throws the journalism card out there. Can't deny his credentials but that doesn't preclude him from being on some bullshyt.

Ethics from the Society of Professional Journalists:

- Test the accuracy of information from all sources and exercise care to avoid inadvertent error. Deliberate distortion is never permissible.
— Avoid stereotyping by race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, geography, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance or social status.
— Show compassion for those who may be affected adversely by news coverage. Use special sensitivity when dealing with children and inexperienced sources or subjects.
— Recognize that gathering and reporting information may cause harm or discomfort. Pursuit of the news is not a license for arrogance.
— Clarify and explain news coverage and invite dialogue with the public over journalistic conduct.
— Encourage the public to voice grievances against the news media.
— Admit mistakes and correct them promptly.
— Expose unethical practices of journalists and the news media.
— Abide by the same high standards to which they hold others.

Dude crosses these lines OFTEN when being on that show. Nothing he does on First Take represents journalism. He's an entertainer on TV.

Falling back on being a journalist in the past has nothing to do with what he presently does on TV. It has NOTHING to do with journalism....everything to do with being an entertainer.

He is NOT a journalist when he's on TV. I grew up with cats who were ASSASSINATED during their pursuits of journalism. Stephen A Smith gives them a bad name when he touts it on TV fronting as if his First Take performances puts him within their ranks.

He is NOT a journalist when he's on that show.

Find me one Well-Known Journalist who fit this description....Just one
