It's not in LA (Chicago, rather) but Thief was one of Mann's early films and one of the clearest predecessors to Collateral. Straight piff :banderas:

That movie had the best depiction of mob guys that was ever on screen, specifically the character of Leo. Showed exactly just how brutal, cunning and insidious the Mafia really was, as opposed to Scorsese that depicts them as these cartoonish, goofy , pasta eating fat old men with funny accents. Leo was acting all nice and amiable throughout the movie as long as Frank did what he wanted. He was "helping" Frank with his problems but actually he got his hands into every part of Frank's life. Soon as Frank bucked, Leo showed his true colors.

"I'll put your c*nt wife on the street to be fukked in the ass by ni**ers and Puerto Ricans."
"I'll whack out your whole family. People will be eating them in their Wimpy Burgers tommorow."

Pure evil.:wow:

Haha, I love that scene too, so vicious and cold, but Frank walked right into it, and didn't play his hands right....I don't entirely agree with the Scorcese criticisms, I see your point though. Leo, in true Mann fashion is much more grounded in a grim and brutal reality, a modest house in t he suburbs, everyday 'good old guy' persona, underneath is the real face of the Mob, pure violence and manipulation.

It's true that mob guys are also vicious in Casino or Goodfellas, but they are also very cartoonish, and the true extent of their competence is played down. That was just Scorsese's style, he mixed brutality and humor. So in one scene you would have Joe Pesci crush a man's head in a vice and in the next you have Artie Piscano, the underboss of KC who could fukk up a cop of coffee.

- I was out there with my goomah
-Your goomah? What were you doing with your goomah?
-What else, I gave her a scheff.
