perhaps. I have my grievances and disappointments with African people as a whole and I'm AA. And as far as Africans owning banks, airlines, and oil companies that's great and all. However, it isn't anything spectacular considering that, that is what they should be doing in THEIR countries on THEIR soil. And I don't measure an entire people's condition based on a few individuals and their successes.
The majority of Africa is still very much behind the rest of the world. That is a hard pill to swallow for me just as much as it should be for a native Africa.

this is what African Americans are best at doing.

Black people love to mention the likes of Barack Obama, Oprah, and a few other of the handful of success stories to somehow imply that "we've come a long way".

The fact of the matter is, no matter how many Nigerian owned oil wells there are, NON-AFRICAN people are reaping more of the benefits of African mineral wealth than actual Africans.

do you know that the UK does not own a single oil company, all the utilities apart from one are foreign owned....

If countries in Africa had the type of deficit that America and many other western countries had they wouldnt be behind....

a lot of the arguments are extremely simplistic, most countries have been independent 50 odd years...... CIA interference, puppet dictators, world bank, bad leaders, corruption, sponsored coups are the reason why SOME countries are in the state they are in and not some so called inferiority complex...lol

some of you are guilty of the things you most complain of...

I can take a camera and film in the worst parts of Detroit .....i can direct everyone to worldstar and say "this is an accurate reflection of black America"

the first thing you all would cry is that its biased only showing the worst parts...... there are 58 countries in Africa, some of you need to travel there yourself before you base such lazy and outdated opinions...

when you look at the richest black people in the world they are all Africans, obviously you are not getting the full story

dont believe the hype

I'm one of the AA community's greatest social critic so it wouldn't surprise nor offend me in the slightest.
I don't care how many rich individuals there are in Africa.
Because when you look at Africa in a panoramic view you'll quickly realize that it doesn't matter. Again, one persons success doesn't determine the overall success of an entire people. Ironically many AA's get this confused as well. They look at Obama (a half white man), Oprah, Jay Z, Colin Powell and many distinguished others as a reflection of how far they've come along. When in reality their community is headed backwards. I don't need to go into detail here because that's a different topic for a different day.

I can only speak on Nigeria, but every oil company in Nigeria has to be 60 percent Nigerian owned that includes the likes of SHELL..... meanwhile the UK does not own a majority shareholding in a single oil company....

like I said earlier its about perspective

there's many lvls to the way africa is kept backward and confused.

1. first and foremost the west encourages corruption in africa. western corporations will only look out for its interests and favor politicians who can look out for their interests. the top africans work for or do business these companies already anyway. so when they get on they just do business with these foreign companies anyway which empowers them even further and weakening their own country in the long term.

2. western corporations get each other all the time and fight it out in court. africans tend to keep their guards down dealing with western corporations exposing themselvves to get taken.

3. like someone pointed out corruption is probably so deep in africa that they can't get out of it.

4. lets take it that the nigerian business is right that nigerians got their sh1t together... now they have to face a higher level of difficulty like the cia and military industrial complex. cause western corporations can change world perception using the western media and destroy any african country regardless of how well it's doing eg. libya. bombing it back to the stone age in less than a week.

5. taht lady in that vid talkin about south africa is in a better situation than the rest of africa. when she really should be talkin about how south africa should be a better country than most european countries.

6. that white nicca sitting with them is a plant to confuse them with stupid policies designed to benefit the west in the long run. shoot.. one of them africans is probably getting paid for his own benefit to sell out africa.

the different tribes and internal conflicts holds them back. religion holds them back.

bad governance and management is the reason why many African nations are the way they are. An inferiority complex is why those who do have power can't manage their county without a white hand. And an inferiority complex combined with ignorance and complacency is the reason why the citizens of these nations don't displace those already in power.

I guess you have to define poor

nigeria is poor by most statistical measures

how are you defining poor and what statistical measure are you using?

Nigeria is sitting on vast resources in oil, gas , mineral wealth which it OWNS, its national debt is relatively low........
average earnings are low compared to western standards of course, but then the cost of living is cheaper.......

the problem is and has always been the way the country is run, the same people who were running the country when it was made independent in the 60s are the same people running the country now

and ultimately whose fault is that?

Thats just silly..... Obama is bending over backwards to the Chinese....David Cameron is in China right now touting for investment...

but when China invest in Africa all of a sudden its because they cant manage their countries?.... talk about double standards

look how much of Americas debt China owns....if they pulled the plug you will be fukked, so why is iot that America doesnt have an inferiority complex ....smh

yeah but resources arent wealth, and resources are really the bottom of the barrel in terms of wealth

the real measure of wealth is the the level of education of the average nigerian which would tell you how able nigerians are to take resources and create finished goods, what is the point of having oil if you a cant make gasoline?

because of the lack of education the resources do not mean anything to the average person, the average person is poor

i would suggest you change how you measure wealth, human capital is 10000 times more important than natural resources and human capital is a much better measurement of wealth, using that measurement nigeria's resources are about zero to be honest, and it will remain zero until literacy is 90% and higher education is widely available to a normal person

like I said China owns most of Americas debt its seen as investment, they invest in Africa and the same Americans that are begging for Chinese investment are trying to warn Africans of their intentions............

to answer your question its the governments fault, but to put it down to an inferiority complex is just stupid..... Africas biggest problem is corruption and bad governance hands down

If you tell me Africa should be doing better I agree, where I disagree is the reasons some people stated and also an over exaggeration of some of the problems

Why does corruption and bad government exist in the first place?

Second, even if you have a good government, progress can't really happen unless the people are on the same page as their leaders. The leaders aren't miracle workers.
Indeed, the people must be committed to the same ideals as their leaders and be willing to realize those ideals. Otherwise, the leaders might become frustrated and devolve into corruption, despair, and ineptitude
