US tipping culture

This is a spinoff of that thread with the waiter getting the slur on their receipt.

What's the opinion on tipping around here? In the US, tipping is practically mandatory in restaurants regardless of the level of service given. If you don't tip/tip well, you are viewed as an a$$hole.

Why is this accepted when you have other industries where people work just as if not harder but aren't allowed to get tips? Why are restaurants allowed to rely on their customers to directly pay their workers but other places aren't allowed to? The restaurant industry literally develops their business model around this.

What say you TLR?

Know your budget before you go out to eat. If you can't afford the meal, then don't go or get a cheaper option. You should know what you're getting into before you order your meal. Having $20 on you and ordering a meal and drink not expecting to pay tip or tax. Gotta know what the business is. It's much cheaper to cook at home or even go somewhere else. Nobody making anyone eat out and tip.
