Overall - this was better than the Eternals and Thor 4, Thor 2, Thor 1. Honestly just a little worse than Captain Marvel 1 tbh. But CM 1 was also not a good movie, even by the low MCU standards. In terms of spectacle, CGI movies are best appreciated with a big screen. My 32" pc monitors would not have done this any justice.
The Villain - As has been said, Strong Villains make Good Movies - There's not much in sense of strength here. Even though the villain's motivation was clear, but the backstory should have been brought up way earlier. There's not much in terms of political discussion here, but killing off Computer Saddam lead to a civil war, depletion of resources, and a refugee crisis.
The enemy wasn't the patriarchy at all. (Though the marriage of convenience...)
Ali - They leaned way hard into the fan girl aspect of her character...but then what else did they develop about her in own series? And she's a little to 12 year old to be a 16 year old....at the same time in my experience, a lot of Indian/Pakistani chicks are so sheltered by overbearing parents that they're a bit infantilized. And if you've ever dated one, the Disney Princess aspects show up mad quick. I digress..
They don't know what to do with this character.
Ali's Family - Overbearing conservative Family was good for fan service, I guess. But I was in a theater with 2 other people. The jokes weren't funny without crowd participation.
Brie - she was fine. They didn't really give her much to work with in terms of script. And what she had.... The best bit she has a one liner to Pakistani Marvel. Brie's first arc that gets dropped was her being a leader....nothing comes of that. In fact a lot of the big moves are her acting on her own.
The camera seems to have lingered on some erect nipples and we got a few booty shots....from Teyonnah.
And her second sort of Arc was coming clean to Teyonnah about not coming back to Earth?
I blame the director/writers here for some bull...
If Brie was the legal guardian* (see what I did there), and Teyonnah ended up in an abusive foster care home....
For this to work, they needed to establish a bond between Brie and Teyonnah, and then show how that bond was broken by Brie not being there.
Again, Marvel failed Brie by not knowing what to do with her character.
Teyonnah - Did she have a bit too much rhythm with the Double Dutch* and "Indian/Alien" Dance sequence? Anyway, I didn't really get her arc/development. Unsure of how powers, didn't know she could do all of that.....and Brie restarts the sun.... Wait what?
They don't know what to do with her.
*You knew it was a sista directing it just off of this.
The tension between Black and White Marvel - Do people really feel that way about they auntie like that?
*Unless Disney was tryna say something else on the low about CM and Teyonnah's Mama.....
The Chemistry between all 3 - Isn't bad per se....but Black and Brown Marvel don't have a separate relationship outside of White Marvel.
The fights - the tag in/tag out was cool. I don't think that would have developed in an afternoon on a spacecraft, but whatev's
The Direction/Editing - If someone was gonna exposite what wsa going on, it should not have been Teyonnah/Brie. I dont' know much about show not tell - but the Villain woefully needed development.
"I am going to take everything from you because you took everything from me."
That was the low key motive of the villain.
But it's Brie that comes to that conclusion.
Wrapping Up - It was fine to meh. If cats talmbout go woke, go broke - this wasn't woke at all. It's standard corporate fare. And they could have went woke.
The kufi in me is like
- Why the Black and Brown lowkey worshipping the Blond Aryan Superwoman?"
- Why is the ultimate enemy a Black woman?
- Why is the white woman in a loveless marriage with an Asian Dude?
If they wanted to go woke, they could of. But Hollywood woke is doing palette changes on the NPCs.
