....or, at the very least, to NOT be Black.

There could have been some Native American blood back in the 1600s through marriages to the local Indians in or around the Tidewater area and NC Coast. They claim that they are an offshoot of the Croatans. But that blood would've been phased out a long time ago. The damning evidence is that they all have the same surnames of colonial free black families. Families that were started by free black men and white women which explains why they all carry black surnames. Lumbees are just offshoots of those same families that went into hiding.

Yep. I have Oxendine and Chavis in my family tree. My uncle is a Chavis from Philadelphia and he told me straight up that his old Chavises were free blacks that owned slaves down in Virginia.
The funny thing is that a lot of those try racial isolates in Virginia and North Carolina fit right in with Black people when they moved to New York and Philadelphia.

I've been meaning to post this:

the person that really kick started the Haliwa "tribe" (same stock as Lumbees) was from Philly by way of NC

which leads back to

yeah, it's common as hell. There are many known Aframs from those same stocks but they don't identify as "Indian" so you wouldn't be aware of it. For example, NBA player Mike Bibby comes from the same stocks as the Lumbee

his cousin who was from Philly

I’m sorry I’m not knocking the lumbee I’d be racist towards anyone that wasn’t native. Id understand that blacks were forced here but shyt it’s still our stolen land.

my exwife was native and they weren’t too keen on her marrying a black man...But they said it’s far better than her marry a guzack (white person)

They arent even indian, they are a group of tragic mulattoes

Most of the Lumberton cats related too. That's why I scoff when people bring up crime rates there. Its basically families beefing. Plus they heavy on the alcoholic rates too

Yep, oxidene and Locklear
Man, this is so true. My mother was born and raised in Lumberton, and my grandmother still lives there now. When I go and see her, both her and my aunty will talk of the city, what’s going on, and our history within the city. I’m related to a lot of folks there, as there’s even a section in the city named after my mother’s maiden name; Gavintown. She’s definitely told me a story or 2 about supposed fam members doing each other harm.

That alcoholic shyt true as well. My cousin was a prominent judge in the city for the longest. Man, he’d drink anyone under the table. Never forget being up there, and he come stumbling in the house with a mason jar full of what smelled and seemed like pure rubbing alcohol. Surprised he ain’t end up blind off that shyt

Yeah it’s really like that. Like I said earlier post one Lumbee woman that I knew said that they try to hook them up with each other when they’re very young. It’s almost like the lobbies have arranged marriages. A lot of Marrying cousins too.
That kind of thing happened a lot in South Louisiana too. A town named Grand Marais was known as place were 2nd and third cousins were encouraged to hook up.

This thread reminds me that where I used to live in Alabama there were a bunch of white people with the surname Congo. I always wondered what a genetic test would turn up on them. They too claimed to be part Indian. Funny thing is, a lot of them had really curly hair, and they even considered it a family trait, but they attributed it to their "Indian" ancestry.

Yeah we know what that test would show up.

that kind of thing happened where ever large communities of free people of color existed:

Above the fray.
Kelvin Sampson, the basketball coach, is the probably the most well known Lumbee I can think of right now.
Coach Sampson is in the Final Four this year. At the press conference, legendary journalist William C. Rhoden asked him to speak about his father.
He mentions his father, his background, and an incident that occurred in 1958.
