Russia withdrew several brigades totaling up to 5,000 soldiers from Ukraine to repel the Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region, as of mid-last week, The Wall Street Journal reported on Aug. 17.

One of these brigades came from Donetsk, the center of Russia's current offensive, while others were pulled from less critical areas. The source also noted that Russia may need to withdraw even more forces from Ukraine to defend Kursk, potentially requiring over 20,000 well-trained troops.

Western estimates suggest Ukraine has deployed 6,000 soldiers to Kursk and holds an additional 4,000 in reserve to support operations in Sumy Oblast. According to the source, a significant portion of the troops in the Kursk offensive are reserves that Ukraine had been building with Western support for operations later this year and into 2025.

Analysts tracking the situation via online videos estimate that Ukraine has lost dozens of armored vehicles in the first nine days of the invasion, although human losses remain unknown. However, according to a 44th Brigade observer cited by the WSJ, Ukrainian casualties are reportedly lower than those during last year’s offensive.

I think the last reason really holds potential.

Russia doesn’t want to drop 1000s mines on its own land so that limits its ability to stop troops to trench warfare and bomb drops.

So cutting off winter supply lines using western weapons fired from inside Russia limits their ability to fix and thus starving their enemy when they need supplies most. In the Civil War, it was destroying the supply lines that majorly ended the war.

Helped her how?

The propaganda is getting a little too thick They're attacking and defending against attacks they don't have the time or resources to feed and care for this woman.

If the Russians evacuated they evacuated really sick and elderly and people who decided to stay and take their chances will do that.

I'm not saying the Uke's ain't kicking ass and taking names what started as a raid has been wildly successful but lets not act like they're setting up feeding centers and directing civilian traffic/

Actually I'm sure they are directing civilian traffic but not to help old babuskas cross the street it's to facilitate their own miltary road traffic which would be the priority.

But Slava Ukraine I don't want to be accused of being an orc.

Explain this to me like I'm 5.

How is he not under pressure? It would be like a Mexican cartel taking over several towns in Texas. The average citizen here, let alone abroad, would be looking at us and our military like we're f*cking crazy.

Fred.

1. Russians are notoriously apathetic and cynical politically.
2. There is no opposition to Putin.
3. The Russian state controls the media.
4. This doesn't directly affect 99.9% of the Russian population, who are just going on about their normal day.

Russian official speaks out: leaked audio exposes deep-seated corruption and chaos amid Ukrainian advance in Kursk region

Sunday, August 18, 2024 1:35:11 PM

In a dramatic leak published by the news outlet Astra, an audio recording captures Alexander Garkavenko, the head of administration in Goncharovka, Kursk Region, discussing the dire situation amid the Ukrainian advance in the Kursk region. Garkavenko reveals that for two days, officials in Moscow were fed "pleasant news" while Russia was losing ground. Describing the event as rooted in "corrupt chaos," he details a feeling of widespread betrayal among local officials.

Garkavenko outlines how well-informed Ukrainian forces seemed to be, moving swiftly through forests and dirt roads. He underscores the unprotected state of the borders, where "mine" signs were mere decoys without actual mines. He recounts a personal experience confirming this facade when he hit such a sign during a fire emergency, only to be assured it was safe to proceed. "It was all a sham," Garkavenko declares.

Highlighting the desperation of Russian conscripts, Garkavenko mentions they had only two magazines of ammunition each, lacked communication tools, and wandered in the forest for three days before evacuating with civilians. He realized the full extent of the breakdown when documents were evacuated from the FSB and police buildings. Authority was nonexistent in Sudzha, with officials stationed in Bolshoye Soldatskoye, while acting governor Alexey Smirnov claimed on television that "everything is under control."

"Today we arrive in Plekhovo—tomorrow the Ukrainians are there. We reach Ulanok—by the next day, they are present there. We get to Vorobzha—same story," Garkavenko narrates, noting the rapid progress of Ukrainian forces. He mentions Russian troops were unable to recover the bodies of 14 soldiers at a gas station in Cherkasskaya Konopelka, just 2 km from Sudzha, because the area was under Ukrainian control.
