"Hundreds" of Russian soldiers have so far surrendered during Ukraine's operation in Russia's Kursk Oblast, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Aug. 13.

"I would like to thank all our soldiers who replenish the exchange fund. It is very important for our country," Zelensky said in his evening address.

"Hundreds of Russian soldiers have already surrendered, and all of them will be treated humanely. They did not even receive such treatment in their own Russian army," Zelensky added.

Ukraine's cross-border incursion into neighboring Kursk Oblast began on Aug. 6, and by Aug. 13, Ukraine said it controlled 74 settlements in the region.

Russia's regional authorities claimed on Aug. 12 that Ukraine is in control of 28 settlements in Kursk Oblast, adding that the incursion was up to 12 kilometers deep along a 40-kilometer front.

Ukrainian foreign ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi told reporters on Aug. 13 that "unlike Russia, Ukraine does not seek to seize territory" but wants to "protect the lives of our people."

Ukraine's incursion into Russia's Kursk Oblast aims to prevent Moscow from sending additional reinforcements to the front in Donbas and stop Russian cross-border strikes, Tykhyi said.

Why are Russia so unprepared:jbhmm:

They've been unprepared since the beginning of the war. If they can't zerg rush you and dig in (trench warfare) they can't do shyt. If Ukraine can use this opportunity to make advances and take back what little territory they've lost, I'm not sure what Russia can do next. Especially if Kamala wins in November. Russia needs Trump to win to stop all this.

Ukrainian soldiers started to suffer heavy casualties. Will this become their Battle of The Bulge?

I just saw 20 times as many russian soldiers taken prison than the amount of ukrainian dead in those pictures

:francis:
Ukraine currently using the same tactic as Russia did at the beginning of the war. They send small mechanized columns to take lightly defended settlements before the enemy could consolidate their defense and just like Russia at the beginning they manage to capture lots of territories and prisoners. But when Russia has managed to consolidate their defence and start to ambush those undermanned mechanized columns they going to suffer heavy casualties just like what Russia experienced in 2022.

There are no large groups of trained russian fighters who arent already engaged in a front....

To "consolidate their defense" requires pulling frontline soldiers.. thereby easing the front for Ukraine....

This is not the same as the beginning of the war

the political situation is even more dire as regardless of what Russian people were told about the progress of the war...

Russia itself being invaded and unable to quickly remove foreign troops is a disaster optically

You feel like this invasion move is going to hurt ukraine...

when it has already helped them moral wise, damaged the Russian Military politically, and will lead to easing on whatever front the reinforcements are pulled back from.

Its not like this incursion led to some front breaking down from lack of ukrainian soldiers..

Bingo. I forsee the UA using the same defensive tactics they deploy on other frontlines:

Fortify positions

Wait for the RF to send full mechanized assaults

Burn the column with mines, FPV drones, Anti-tank missiles, and artillery

The only difference is... this time the Russian death fields will be on Russian soil, which the Kremlin will be unable to hide. The buzzsaw is in their house now.

Russian forces keep advancing in Donbass and ISW said they didn't sent any sizeable units away from other frontlines, even Ukrainian officers in Donbass said they didn't feel any change in pressure from Russia, on the other hand to achieve this incursion Ukraine drew away several frontline units from Donbass and the more Ukrainian units get sent to Kursk the less reinforcement that could be sent to Donbass. You acting Russia is the one with chronic manpower problem when Russia could draws units from around Moscow or other borders before they have to abandon their offensive in Ukraine.
