average salary in the uk:

Median salaries in the UK

The mean salary in the UK can be a misrepresentation due to a small number of people earning a lot. This means that the median salary—the middle point if all the salaries are plotted on a graph—gives a more accurate view of the UK average wage. According to the ONS, the median full-time salary in 2020 was £31,461, and the median salary for part-time workers was £11,234.

average salary in the usa:

The median salary in the U.S. in the second quarter of 2022 was $1,041 per week or $54,132 per year.

"This will come as something of a surprise to Americans, who generally think of Mississippi being so poor as to be almost third world in the extent of its deprivation. It'll also come as something of a surprise to most visitors to Britain, who generally see London as being representative. It isn't, London itself is the richest area of The European Union. There are other areas of Britain that are counted among the poorest. Britain is, really (and I say this as a native of the place) a truly world class and world wealthy city surrounded by an entirely unremarkable European country. And now for the surprise: Britain is poorer than Mississippi."
I seriously don’t get the UK because I be seeing 2-5k rents in London when the average salary is like 30-50k

like this man has been saying ..

The UK needed to improve on the record of the 2010s – a decade that saw the weakest job mobility since the 1930s, the poorest productivity record for 120 years and the worst record for inequality of any EU country apart from Bulgaria, the report said. Without improvement, is authors wrote, Britain would have per capita incomes closer to Italy than Germany by the decade’s end.

UK economy could resemble that of Italy by end of 2020s – report

we need a visionary at the head of the country instread of

Brehs in here thinking that a little tweak here or there is going to fix the UK don't understand the magnitude of the problem. It's not about Labour vs. Cons. The country needs change. Cliche but true.

Yeah, it's mind-boggling.

I really don't know how people live off the meager salaries. NYC is extremely expensive, but salaries for professional jobs are really high too.

Almost crash the UK economy, which was already on a downward spiral, then proceed to write a book about the "disastrous ideas of the global left", Tory brehettes.

The sheer audacity and undeserved confidence is almost admirable.

Being white in the western world has to be like walking around an open carry state with a grenade launcher secured in your backpocket :wow:

What are the keys to this IYO? From the POV of an American, it's a lack of investment in everywhere that isn't London (which has only gotten worse now that the EU's not sending monetary support to places in Wales or up North). It's also that a lot of these UK towns haven't figured out how to move away from industry and attract businesses. My understanding, to pick two places in the same region, is that Newcastle is doing far better than Sunderland because Newcastle pivoted to building a world-class university and focusing on tourism, and for whatever reason, leadership in Sunderland didn't do that. Too many places in the UK are like Sunderland, is what I'm getting.

I only have part of the story and could be wrong. What do you think?

it's chiefly low productivity

now:

like a lot of these discussions they fail to mention the class system (low social mobility), rentier (exploitative, short-termist) nature of the uk, education skepticism, culture (low standards and skills) and societal structure (hangover from colonialism).

they also act like this is a new problem since 2008 ...

1998: pg. 5

"The scale of the challenge is spelt out in chart 1.1, which shows that the UK has a productivity gap of around 40 per cent with the US and around 20 per cent with France and Germany. Closing the gap will require a sustained drive over the long-term."
