How do councils have so much money to fukk up?
Council tax and other services. You pay a council tax if you own or rent a home and that council uses that to do public services like housing, schools, sanitation etc.
They got greedy and paid for it.

Why go all in on a scheme like this?

Not a federal government, so there's no state/province to distribute, so the money goes directly to the towns and "regions"/counties without oversight. Also... taxes. Prior to Trump and Brexit all of them had even more money because China was pumping them full of it for development.

The government allocate money to councils depending on population, council tax generated etc. Once that money is in the council's hands, the locally elected council have free reign to spend it how they want.

The caveat is that any money left over before the next financial year is deducted from the next year's budget. Meaning you get penalised for being financially prudent. Hence that's why in Feb-Mar time you'll see a lot of roadworks as councils are spending the last of their budget

YOU HAVE TO GO BACK

The irony is net migration (or legal migration) is 600k a year. Since Brexit, the net migration numbers have gone up.

Asylum seekers claim asylum, get put in temporary housing and wait to get approved by the Home Office. This can take months or years. In that time asylum seekers cannot work and get a measly pittance to survive on until their application comes through.

But none of the above is ever put in the news. Or how most migrants put more into the system than they take out. Or that the Conservative government have let in over 1 million migrants in the last 18 months.

Something about 2023 seems off. A lot of people walking through life in a daze.

Cracks really starting to show in this place :patrice:

Same here in the US though we have the small privilege of the strong USD and reserve status propping us up so folks are more in a denial that things are bad than a daze. I feel sorry for brehs in the UK it seems like you are in for a lot of hard years especially after the way the Tories have fukked up the country. I hope you got a good job and fam to hold you down.

Yeah you guys still have some growth & good salaries

This place is a one trick pony relying on property investment but now young people cant buy and Landlords are being pushed out making the BTL system more tricky. Then you’ve got gentrification taking place.

Add that with inflation and terrible wages across the public sector, looking spooky. A lot of doctors and nurses leaving for US/Australia.

I’m 23 and I’m deciding to go to University, get my skills up and bounce. Nothing for me here it seems.

ok cool. try and add what tech you can in with that. certs even.

also build a framework around your efforts which includes skills that you can use to work independently and people who you can get advice from.

the UK is not doing well at the mo IMO and has major structural issues that hobble productivity, new industries and economic growth.

from what I know (in the absence of finding new resources or new inventions) the only way out of the situation that the uk requires focus, hard choices and hard work.

i'm not sure that the powers that be even have a plan.

it seems as if their solution is to muddle along and cross those bridges when they can no longer avoid having to.

This get skills breh. The days of waving a uni degree as a job getter are done. Do IT certs or barring that, a trade. In Uni you can do it cheaper by getting the books at the library or through interlibrary loan instead of buying them.

E-commerce hustling is getting harder than it used to. If you want to do business, supply chain (join CIPS) and accounting are still good.

For IT there is a lot from data analytics to networking to cybersecurity.
