Is Gaethje’s wrestling background enough to stop Khabib from taking him down and killing him? :jbhmm:

Gaethje was a Division I All-American(ie finished top 8 in the nation) in 2010. While that is impressive, we almost never see him use it in MMA. There are plenty of dudes who are accomplished in wrestling, striking, etc, yet they're not able to use that skill effectively in MMA.

Tony didn't have the same quickness tonight as previous fights. Whether that was the extended camp, being 36, or both IDK.

Gatheje looked impressive. Very impressive. Don't expect Khabib to stand there and box with him.

Imma sum up what I said to my boy who's a huge tony fan during the Tony khabib build up.

I cant tell if Tony has really good stand up, or if his chin and cardio allows him to stand on top of his opponent and eventually wear em down n finish them.

This fight may have answered this question, but I respect Tony's game to much to leave it answered after just 1 fight.

There's good elements to his stand up.
He has a solid, long, stinging jab and throws a wide variety of strikes as well as a high volume. His defense has always been bad though. The thing is, his heart and cardio is off the charts and combined with a great submission game and good power, he's still a tough out for almost anyone. Don't forget Justin was very nearly KTFO by that uppercut at the end of round 2
