But that looks like it will be out in 2020. Looks like Universal wants to get the Hobbs movie out first to set up a nice franchise and give it time to grow.
It works for them, they get a spin off out with a popular character and can wait for the director they want for Fast 9.
It also deals with another issue a lot of people were complaining that the main films were getting too superhero like. This gives them a chance to make each film distinctive. Hobbs can have all the crazy superhero madness and the mainline films can wind the more extravagant stuff back.
