The last couple of months of
Florida 1984 get kind of hard to follow as a lot of storylines are dropped and a lot of talent leaves the area with no write off.
Starting with the main shyt:
Kevin Sullivan fukkery
Blackjack Mulligan was indeed able to save the mind of the young girl under Sullivan's control, but Sullivan would hospitalize Mulligan in response and outside of a promo from his bed with Kendall and the girl at his side, Blackjack was not seen or mentioned again on TV the rest of the year. The main reason being he bailed to WWE (with a few shots in JCP first). So, with Sullivan now out of a feud, he slaps the fukk out of his slave girl on TV, which causes
Superstar Billy Graham to intervene and turn face. However, Sullivan nearly blinded him with the golden spike, and this led to about 2 months of utter nonsense promos like Superstar tying himself to a river bed in the desert as penance for his actions with Sullivan, comparing himself to Jesus and quoting MLK. Meanwhile, Sullivan would bring back the
Purple Haze as back up, and while they tried to literally murder Superstar on more than one occasion, the angle was dropped entirely and Sullivan was off TV the last 2 months of the year. He still wrestled on live events, but would take about 4 months off and by the time he returned, Blackjack was back in the area and they resumed their feud.
Jesse Barr and
Dory Funk Jr. continued to be c*nts to
Scott McGhee, tarring and feathering him in the studio, leading to Jesse winning the Florida Heavyweight Championship. Shortly after,
Dutch Mantell arrived in the area with a personal vendetta against Dory that he wouldn't reveal to Gordon Solie, but bullwhips were involved and Dutch got the better of Dory. Due to this (and Dory leaving for the RWTL in AJPW), Jesse would denounce Dory and then got a HEAVY endorsement from
Ric Flair himself, who said that Barr was the closest thing to a peer Ric had in the entire industry. During this period, Jesse and Dory would feud with
Billy Jack Haynes, ending with Barr putting Haynes out of action for a bit, as well as
Mike Graham, who ended up getting
Harley Race as a surprise partner against them. Jesse would spend the last month and a half of the year feuding with a returning
Brian Blair, bringing in
Killer Khan for back up.
Krusher Khrushchev arrived in Florida, and quickly formed a championship winning partnership with
Jim Neidhart (and
The Saint as a third). They would spend most of the Fall/Winter feuding with
Pez Whatley and various partners, including the
One Man Gang, who, after having his haircut by the commie sympathizers...also immediately was gone from TV to do the RWTL. They would then turn their sights to Dutch Mantell, over Dutch's time as a veteran in Vietnam. In a bizarre twist,
Michael Hayes would pop in unannounced to give Gordon Solie a briefcase from the Freebirds for Christmas. Krusher and Jim interrupted the promo, still pissed at Dutch, destroyed the briefcase, and Hayes/Dutch ended up teaming up against them.
Those were most of the main angles, but there was an influx of talent towards then end of the year with the
Youngbloods,
RNR Express,
PYT Express, Jerry Lawler,
Jimmy Valiant,
Bugsy McGraw, and
The Fantastics all coming in for at least one or two big shows, but most didn't send in any promos, show up in studio, or even have footage shown on TV later.
Bob Backlund also popped in for a few shows. Neither
dikk Slater nor
Barry Windham returned to television, as dikk went to JCP and Barry (along with Mike Rotundo) went to WWE.
Granted, I did only get the second half of the year, but Florida definitely doesn't have the fukkery factor of Memphis, or the ring work of Mid South/Stampede. What it does have going for it is it seemed like stars from every territory would come in to work a show just to have a nice weekend in Florida, so those fans got to see a lot of talent more frequently than most areas in the country. They got Dusty/Flair regularly, Dory and Terry, King, Harley, Backlund, Graham, RNR, and more all in a few month period.
