Born in Switzerland, the 34-year-old has been part of the WWE for four years where he has built a reputation as one of the strongest pound-for-pound wrestlers in the business.
With a physique like that of a chisled statue, you would expect the former Tag Team and United States champion’s diet to be bland.
But speaking to
foxsports.com.au on Friday morning, Cesaro is anything but basic.
“I always bring a post-workout protein shake with me and some cereal for the mornings,” Cesaro said of his diet.
“There’s a place called Chipotle in the US, it’s Mexican food where everything is made to order; you can get some rice black beans and meat.
“That’s what I eat three times a day.”
TRAVEL TAKES A TOLL
Think the life of a WWE superstar is easy? Think again.
Cesaro recalled his schedule for their recent tour of Australia and you quickly realise it was far from a holiday for these incredible entertainers.
“We started the day in San Francisco and went to the gym around 2pm,” he explained.
“We caught the plane at 6pm to Los Angeles and landed at 8pm. Then took the flight from Los Angeles to Brisbane at 11pm and landed at 6am in Brisbane.
“We went to the hotel and, because I was still awake, I went to the gym, then back to the hotel from the gym around 2pm, took a nap until 4pm, then went to eat.
“Went to the show in Brisbane, then ate again after the show. It was midnight at this point and were back up at 7am and at the airport at 8am to fly to Melbourne.
“I didn’t have time to go to the gym that day.
“That gives you an idea of what it looks like.”
WORKING OUT
With long car rides and flights, finding the time let alone the energy to work out requires serious commitment.
But it’s something Cesaro takes extremely seriously.
Currently enjoying a split routine, he divides his workouts into upper body and lower body days.
“When I travel it’s hard,” he explained.
“I try to work out whenever I can. Right now I’m working out about four days a week at a minimum and that’s split up into different days — push and pull and leg days.
“I’m always changing it up and trying different stuff all the time because if your body gets used to something it tries to make it easier, so you always need to make it as hard as possible.”
QUICK QUESTIONS
Question: Who is the strongest athlete in WWE?
Cesaro: Mark Henry. They don’t call him the Worlds Strongest Man for nothing.
Question: Have you trained with Mark Henry?
Ceasro: I was in the gym a couple of times when he was in there too and the weight he eats is scary.
Question: Do you still have to pinch yourself when you’re performing in front of thousands of fans live and millions through the television?
Cesaro: All the time. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to do what I do. Hard work pays off if you stay true to yourself and dedicated.
Cesaro faces Kevin Owens at SummerSlam live on Monday, August 24 at 9am.
HERE ARE CESARO’S TOP FIVE TIPS TO GET IN SHAPE (Courtesy of WWE.com)
BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF
“Be honest with yourself and don’t make excuses, which means you have to be accountable. Don’t eat bad food. Only eat good food. Don’t say, ‘Oh, it doesn’t matter if I ate bad once.’ No. You never eat bad, and you get in the habit of eating good.”
GET INTO HABITS
“Go to the gym every day and build a routine. You get in that routine and it takes about two months to build a habit or a routine. So you stick with it, and once you stick with it, then you have a good diet and a good routine.”
STICK TO BASICS
“You don’t have to worry about doing a bicep curl on a BOSU (exercise) ball while squatting down. You have to worry about doing basic manoeuvres.”
MASTER THE CORE LIFTS
“Keep things simple. Do squats, deadlifts and some kind of press. Base your routine around those lifts.”
HAVE FUN
“If these tips don’t sound like fun to you, then you’re probably not as motivated as you think you are to get in shape.”
