You're so disappointed that you write a bazillion-word essay bout it huh?
What kind of fakkit hate shyt is this? They're just my theories, nothing more. I like the show and thought it was worth trying to figure out. You sound like a cocksucker man :camby:

Anyways, I think I've figured out the cigarette references in episode 6. I think they tie into evidence that Detective Hayes killed those people in a rage. Remember the people who have their proverbial "cigarettes put out" are people who were found to be missing or murdered. While in the diner Dan o'brien puts out his cigarette in his plate of food and walks away. Hayes watches him leave and then sits back down. The camera zooms into Hayes writing down information about the guy and his license plate, and in the foreground we see a blurred vision of the cigarette put out on the plate. Then after he stops writing they stand up to leave. And just as Hayes says "we've gotta watch this trash", referencing Dan O'brien, the image of the cigarette is shown to us again. Remember Harris James, someone we think Hayes killed, puts out his cigarette when he goes to get Tom in the mansion. At the beginning of the episode Wayne and Amelia are sharing a cigarette. Wayne gives her the rest of the one they're sharing and then lights another cigarette and stares at himself in the mirror. A few episodes ago when Wayne first started back on the case in 90 Amelia brings up that he's started smoking again. Later in episode 6 Henry catches Wayne smoking and says "you're smoking again?" He then passes the cigarettes to Henry and Henry proceeds to light it.

I think the cigarettes represent a satisfaction of appetite, indulgence, emotional relief. In other words, the cigarettes are foreshadowing Wayne finally giving into to those desires in him to hunt and kill. Thus the put out cigarettes are the relief fully realized. With that said, sharing them with Henry points to some future act of violence Henry may have to make. After Henry smokes his cigarette and Wayne brings up his affair, Henry asks him how he knew. His response? "You're still your father's boy." Just a guess but I think it's at least tenable.

This episode featured a lot of references to the church: the pamphlet in Tom's house about curing homosexuality, the image of the Lord's prayer, Amelia visiting a woman's refuge center run by nuns, and Harris James joking about God making the world in 6 days. I think this all will go back to that priest we saw at the beginning of the show who took the pictures. I listened to this guy's theory on who did it, and one thing he did point out was that he thought the priest did it. He also said the story is nothing but a retelling of the "Abducted in plain sight" story, but with different stand-ins. With so many references to the church, I think that theory has a lot of validity. There's more but I'll save that for later.

I still.believe in my shutter island theory. Maybe Amelia wasn't in on it but something strange is up with her.

Btw I do think Tom knows what's going on and was connected. I think he went to Hoyts place because they had a connection anyway. I don't think it's because Dan told him something he didn't know. Im not even sure Harris James kills Tom. We have to wait and see...but there's a reason Roland doesn't want Wayne to bring up Tom's name.

I don't think Amelia is in on it but I think she ends up finding out a key clue the detectives miss. Either she gets too close and receives a threat to keep quiet or tries to tell Wayne and he ignores her.

I would say the Hoyts kill Amelia but I thought the show mentioned she died in 2013. Unless Wayne or Henry are lying about it or the show is using the unreliable narrator trope.

Yeah, some folks on Reddit are thinking Roland might be in on it, pointing to the scene in 2015 when Hays goes to the bathroom.

Roland starts taking a look at all the notes Hays has in Amelia's book and even notices Hays' gun. When Hays comes back and appears to go through an episode of dementia, he asks Roland if he sees the sedan that he's been noticing outside and Roland says he doesn't see anything. A theory is that there actually is a sedan outside and Roland is lying; alongside this, some people think Hays intentionally acted like he wasn't remembering stuff at that moment to test Roland.

I personally didn't view that scene that way but it's an interesting take nonetheless.

I do think Hays was putting on when he came back from the bathroom. Roland was reading Amelia's book where the "Children should laugh" quote would probably tip him off, Hays notices that and starts up the act. He also did the same thing with the interviewer when they asked him about the cop being killed. He seems to use it when he can't be sure if someone is trustworthy with some info while also suffering from the disease.

Doubt it. If thats the case, he would have went to Hoyt in the 1st place years ago instead being devastated for years.
