Anyone notice what the tranny says in the preview for episode 7? About how" they were all wearing animal masks so he figured he was dreaming." Now if you go back and look at all the people who had been killed had lsd and meth in their systems. I think whats going on is that these children were being drugged while the cult people put on their masks and performed their rituals and began raping the kids and the women. I think thats why Marty's daughter seemed so normal as a little girl even though she had clearly been exposed to sexual content. I don't think she's aware that she was ever raped due to her probably being drugged but her unconscious mind is giving her visuals of this event that happened and that's why she has that picture of that drawing with the mask. I don't know if she ever went to one of those Tuttle schools but at some point she definitely had the ritual performed on her and its affected her life ever since

I think there may be some unofficial Tuttle schools around, cult member teachers and shyt.

Just watched it. Didn't see or hear any of what @hexagram23 was saying previously. Matter of fact, the writer and director seem to imply the opposite of this line of thinking :

That isn't actually who he is though. Hell, the writer gave people a big ass clue in episode 3 when Rust is rambling on and on about life and religion and Marty flat out tells him "you sound panicked"...."for a guy that sees no point in existence you sure fret about it an awful lot".

Meanwhile Rust fanboys completely over looked the context and was "OMG look at how edgy and anti-establishment he is, shytting on mainstream religion like that!".

Matter of fact, I felt the affair between Rust and Maggie was lazy writing. Very convenient plot-advancing device that was below the standards set forth by the first 5 episodes.

It wasn't the act itself that was lazy, but the character's subsequent unraveling. If he had sex with her because of the nihilistic outlook, and it was an act of rational decision making, it would have been very in-line with the Rust of the previous 5 episodes. Nic took the easy way out on that one, and it was very cliche in my opinion.

I’ve put off going into the philosophy Cohle espouses in the early episodes because I don’t want people making assumptions about the character of Cohle, or the ultimate aim of this season. The totality of Cohle’s character and the show’s agenda won’t be clear until the eighth episode has ended. It’s also important to me that the mass audience doesn’t need to know or engage these associations in order to enjoy the show. Likewise, I wouldn’t want any viewers to assume we had some nihilistic agenda, or reduce Cohle to an anti-natalist or nihilist. Cohle is more complicated than that. As I’ve said recently, Cohle may claim to be a nihilist, but an observation of him reveals otherwise. Far from “nothing meaning anything” to him, it’s almost as though everything means too much to him. He’s too passionate, too acutely sensitive, and he cares too much to be labeled a successful nihilist. And in his monologues, don’t we detect a whiff of desperation akin to someone who protests too much? When Cohle speaks of the unspeakable, is it with the same illusory perspective as when Hart speaks about the importance of having rules and boundaries? Perhaps that is what Hart references when he tells Cohle in episode 3, “You sound panicked.”
