True Detective Season 1 (NO SPOILERS)

@Sensitive Blake Griffin does have a hell of an idea...what if they fake the falling out so while rust is still investigating the case, marty can move up in the ranks/join certain circles to get some insider info on the people they investigating...a public falling out with rust would make marty look real good to the right people....

The main problem with that is the timelines don't match up. They fell out in '02. They're getting interviewed in 2012. As far as everyone knows these guys haven't spoke since then. Them maintaining a fake beef for a decade in order to solve a case....that's just too much. That's some Mission Impossible shyt. I could see Rust doing something like that because he's crazy....but Marty? There's no way. The guy has no kind of patience whatsoever. He couldn't even wait in the car 10 minutes when Rust when to that bar for Ginger.

Now, a variation of that which would kinda make sense is Rust cuts Marty loose because he knows Marty ain't down for that kind of shyt. So he intentionally beefs with Marty basically to distance himself from him. But Marty wouldn't know that.

the reason it might not be so far fetched: the only thing we know about them falling out is marty saying 'i havent talked to rust in 10 years'...no one's talked to them about the beef, we havent seen evidence of this beef, none of that...all we have is marty saying 'i havent talked to rust in 10 years'...the new cops didnt even ask rust about a falling out with marty cause they didnt know about one...so maybe marty saying that is all part of a lie to not let anyone know they've been working this case for the last 10 years...one thing we do know is they are good at lieing to cover up, they've been doing it for 17 years with the reggie shyt...

...i'm not saying it's so, but i dont think it's as far out there as you might think...

Yeah, I still don't buy the fact that they had a "falling out". All we have to go on is what they're telling the detectives. Marty talked about how he still respects Rust, I just don't buy that they had a legitimate falling out. I think Marty was still helping Rust work on the case, but told everyone he knew that he doesn't talk to Rust anymore. You don't really need to "maintain a fake beef" all you gotta do is tell everyone you all don't talk to eachother and had a falling out.

Ok for the sake of argument let's say they didn't have a falling out.

Rust knew police protocol. In the very first episode when they find the first murder victim they set up a parameter and track who comes and goes. Taking license plates, etc.

So Rust knew he'd be spotted at the new murder scene. He wanted to be spotted. He goes to the interview, rambling about crazy shyt, drinking nonstop, and puts the detectives at ease. They think he's a joke.

Like I said earlier in the thread, if they've been working together why would Marty tell the 2 detectives "Rust has been playing you"? Why would he tell them "nobody can change that much" when they said he was a burn out alcoholic?

Marty blew up his spot twice in the interview. What reason would he have to do that, if he's working with Rust? It doesn't make any sense.
