It's a lot safer now. The new president seems to be doing a good job. There are obviously spots you want to avoid but locals are usually willing to help if you seem cool
Some people claim he made back door agreements with the gangs, but that may be propaganda from the other party idk enough about salvadoran media
Apart from that the new president is doing a good job. He handled Covid well and locked the country down quick, and he's not afraid to tell China to fukk off. The last president was on the verge of selling basically half of our fukking coast and ports to the chinese
