An old female friend of mine died by train hitting her car in LA. Super super sad, she was engaged to be married. I have no idea what her mental state was cause I hadn't run into her in a few years, but they treated it as an accident.

that mental health stigma is still real. word to this post.

Yep. Black people are the worst at downplaying mental illness and thinking it has to always be something else. You'd be amazed at how many kids now actually consider suicide and how many have legit mental disorders. We got whole hoods with untreated PTSD and other issues. Compound that with poverty and a lack of structure or stability.

Pay student athletes please

This isn't a NCAA issue. He was still 6 months away from even getting to college. This is a poverty and mental health issue that is much deeper. It's no quick fix at all to it.

He was schedule to enroll at Georgia Tech next week. If football players graduate high school early, they can enrolled in January.

So true bruh. If you spent time in the hood or at the local community center in the hood, you come across kids who need mental health help A LOT more than you'd expect...and they don't get any help :mjcry:

I mean maybe, but nearly everyone I know who has attempted or committed suicide was showing warning signs to someone in their life.

Even in a perfect situation where they somehow paid immediately in January, it'd still likely not be enough to support a whole family or fully correct their situation.

Add in the fact there are mental health issues across the board in this situation. Him having to be the "head of the household" is something no teenager should be. It's just too much pressure. God forbid there is some form of addiction or abuse in a kid's situation.

I'm just curious to know if the coaches at GT knew he was homeless. And if they did, what could they have done?

Outside of work study or trying to find somebody a job, a school's hands are kinda tied. The best option would be to find a social worker to find some sort of resources for them, and even that can be a long process. And even then, they risk child services coming and putting the kids in state custody.

honestly in a situation like theirs he probably would have been better off signing with a school in state and maybe through their alumni connections in the statehouse they could have expedited some aid that they're eligible for to his family. usually even when they are eligible for some aid it takes a while to kick in. that should have been front and center during the recruiting process because there was no way he was going to be comfortable going off to atlanta while his family is homeless.

RIP.. such a sad story. Wish the family was a little more stable and the kid got to attend GT- then maybe he would've seen a light at the end of the tunnel once on campus

There's a lot that could be said about that whole thing but end of the day it's a horrific story with a LOT of heart-breaking elements.

Kid was so close. So, so close. :snoop:
