Reason number 1) The Butchification of Female Action Leads
They are often desexualized to the point of being undesirable by anyone. Having attractive leads isn't just for the male gaze, woman appreciate beauty as well.
Male stars are often forced into rigorous workout plans in order to prepare for a role because they usually have a gratuitous shirtless scene. This isn't just to excite women. Men also appreciate a idolized build to make it believable that the hero can kick lots of ass. Fat Thor was unpopular with everyone for example. And yet we often get female leads that are 5ft nothing, 110lbs and wearing baggy coveralls that don't accentuate any curves or show any skin. literally worst of both world, not sexy or believably strong.
Reason number 2) Catering towards smaller audiences instead of mass appeal.
If you want to do a billie you stand need a large audience. The male lead movie try to appeal to as many demos as possible. Even black panther had a couple token
white guys in it. Yet female led movie seem to make a concerted effort to target a specific demo. They OD on girl power. Just because Captain Marvel is the star doesn't mean you need to have female side kicks, female villains, female directors, etc etc. Often the male character are limited to non threaten non masculine types as well. Top if off with the lack of sexual appeal in point 1 and you literally have nothing to offer the audience if it isn't female. You will never have a male co-starring a female led film that is as competant as the female lead. Like say how the wasp was in Antman.
Type of Men you see in female centric comic book project
Reason number 3) Rom Com casting instead of action flick Casting
I spoke on the desexualization, but what also hurts it is the plain jane casting for alot of these roles. woman starring in an action films used to be very Amazonian, which made them more of a presence in the action films, Red Sonia Type women, Charlize Theron, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Yeoh. These women were attractive but they were also Taller than average, (or knew martials arts for real). Now we get danty lil ladies shorter than 5'4 playing these roles
This picture can explain what i mean. Nobody would cast these two for the same type of roles. Marvel loves casting petite woman though
Reason Number 4) using your least favorite toys
Marvel and DC have lots of popular female characters. Wonder Woman is obviously at the top of the list. But not every character can headline a franchise.
Generally the characters the do the best, have a lot of source material (solo) to base films on. Spiderwoman is wayyy more popular than Madam Web, but they decided to make a Madam Web film? Storm is wayy more popular X-men leader than Mystique, yet they made her the main leader? We got a series starring Agatha Harkness and yet Kitty Pryde is treated like an Extra in most of her appearances in live action. Characters with bigger followings should still be prioritized.
What comic reader would look at this and say
nah, i'd rather watch a movie about this bytch instead?
