This is like if Knicks stans I grew up with had their way and got to retire Oak, Starks, and Anthony Mason's jerseys because "they defined an era." Which seems like a fukkin joke... but for local fans it's kind of cool. I think I might like this move. Gotta contemplate it a little longer.
Oakley and Starks Yes.

As much as I am a fan of Mason he wasn't on the knicks long enough for that honor.

From a personal standpoint, I'm happy for dude, but looking at this shyt objectively, it sets a strange precedent. If the standard is set at Allen and Z-Bo, obviously M.Gasol and Conley will have theirs retired - all four players who range from good to standard All-Stars. What happens when the same caliber of players come through and last just as long? What happens when BETTER players come through and last just as long? Or players who have multiple All-Star nods and/or take the team on multiple deep playoff runs? Or if they win a title?

I get that both Allen and Z-Bo shaped the ipseity of the franchise, both on and off the court, but so will players in the future when the team changes and takes on another identity. If they're the bar, this team might run out of space in the rafters to hang jerseys before 2040.

:hubie:
For all we know this could be the greatest period in this franchises history, they may never win a title look at how many franchises in pro sports have either never won a title or are in a decades long drought. That core of Z-Bo, Allen, Conley, Gasol gave them roughly 10 years and they made this young franchise relevant that is going to be tough to replicate for future Grizzlies players. I think Allen is one of the greatest defenders in NBA history, and has big cultural impact on Memphis so I'm not mad at all.

Gasol and Conley are 30+ now, in the next half a decade or so maybe sooner the Grizzlies might be a bottom dwelling rebuilding team. Those next Grizzlies HoF'ers aren't coming for awhile.

Retiring numbers is about the local fans IMO......if Allen represents a prosperous era and playing style for the franchise and the fans feel a deep connection to him, its a no brainer to retire his number and I'm glad Memphis is doing it. In the NBA we get caught up in the stars a little too much

I think Haslem definitely deserves it. He is Mr. Miami, he means a lot to that community. That's a guy who is born in Miami, played his high school ball in Miami, went to Florida, played for the Heat for 15+ years. He won 3 titles, made the All-Rookie team, he is actually the All-Time leading rebounder in Miami Heat history.

Also, he was a vital cog to that '06 run he played phenomenal defense on Dirk in both the '06 and '11 Finals. Haslem was a good defender, could hit the 15-footer, could get you double doubles in his prime, and was always a great locker room presence to this day.

Collison was just an energy bench big man a Kurt Rambis type, but he's been in Oklahoma City his entire career, was a pretty important piece of the rotation in their Finals run, he's one of those positive locker room and team culture guys. So maybe he gets it retired but a role in the organization is enough for him.

You're smart enough that I don't need to point out the holes in this logic.
That core of Z-Bo, Allen, Conley, Gasol gave them roughly 10 years and they made this young franchise relevant that is going to be tough to replicate for future Grizzlies players. I think Allen is one of the greatest defenders in NBA history, and has big cultural impact on Memphis so I'm not mad at all..
I'm not debating this, I've almost posted verbatim these very things in this thread. The issue isn't whether he deserves it or not, the issue is because the bar has been set at him, that bar must be met in the future. Unless the franchise dissolves, there will be players who come through who not only meet the standard that TA set, but exceed it. It's a cool gesture on Memphis' part, but like I said, if gestures are the reason for why jerseys are going to be hanging from their rafters, they're gonna run outta space fast.

But that's the point, this isn't about the HOF this about the people that made a major impact for that franchise. Tony Allen isn't some alright defender he's legendary however that won't get him to the HOF so he deserves some level of recognition.

I also think a guy like Varejao should get a jersey retired too.
As I told @ISO, 'recognition because a player wasn't good for the HOF'-type reasons will have this franchise running out of space in the rafters quick.
