Well I guess Atlanta needs to retire Josh Smith number too :mjlol:

A ring of honor ceremony would have been nice. But retiring jerseys for some role players? :camby:

Its pretty amazing how this dudes career took in a new life relatively late.

First half of his career in Boston he was considered a good role player but definitely not the shut-down, key piece he became in Memphis.

This is like if Knicks stans I grew up with had their way and got to retire Oak, Starks, and Anthony Mason's jerseys because "they defined an era." Which seems like a fukkin joke... but for local fans it's kind of cool. I think I might like this move. Gotta contemplate it a little longer.
:hhh: Disrespectful.

From Atlanta to San Fran to LA 4now
I like it especially because its Memphis Tony allen is a legendary player there and honestly they might not ever win a chip or get a superstar. That doesn't mean that this era should be forgotten or that certain players aren't a key piece of their history for a young franchise. :salute:First Team All Defense

Tony Allen's No. 9 to Be Retired by Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies announced Thursday that Tony Allen's No. 9 jersey would be retired and hung from the rafters at the FedExForum on Friday, when Allen returns to Memphis with the New Orleans Pelicans in a preseason game.

General manager Chris Wallace said:

"Tony will forever be one of the Core Four responsible for the turnaround in the Memphis Grizzlies' fortunes and our surge in popularity. There would never have been seven straight years of playoff appearances, the incredible electricity in FedExForum for home games, 'Grit and Grind' and 'Believe Memphis' without Tony Allen’s contributions to the team.

"In the process Tony became more than just one of the toughest defenders in the league—he became a true cult hero who was intertwined with the soul of Memphis like few athletes ever have in any city. Tony and his family will be missed but his impact on the Grizzlies and Memphis will never be forgotten."

Allen responded emotionally to the announcement:

Retiring numbers is different for every organization, some retire numbers when a active player dies some don't. Some retire numbers only if you make the hof some don't.

I bet all my coli cash Nick Collison will be the first number the thunder retire.

Never averaged more than 9 points never played 30 mpg

I doubt it. He had zero impact on the court. :mjlol: at having his jersey next to two MVPs in Westbrook & KD

Then you don't understand team sports. Y'all young nikkas only care about stats. There's a such thing called impact. Horry & Fisher made up 2/5 of the best team I've ever seen...01 Lakers

So Fisher & Horry jerseys deserve to be up there with Kobe, Shaq, Magic, Kareem, Jerry West & Wilt?! :dahell:

The Lakers would have won rings without Fish & Horry. They were key pieces but they weren't worthy of having their numbers retired

Of course the ATL
Zach and Tony impact not the same as Joe/Horford/Smith impact , Zach and Tony changed the franchise around

Not sure why Horford/JJ/Smoove are being mentioned. None of them are getting their jerseys retired in Atlanta. I get that it's a high honor and a players jersey getting retired for the Lakers isn't gonna be the same as a player gettin their jersey retired for the Grizzlies but the honor seems really high for a player who while great defensively, is a non factor offensively and a role player at best. It's seems like he's gettin an achievement that he didn't earn on the court, which is what I thought the jersey retirement ceremony was for, not off the field community work
