Showrunner: What if we have a show set in Tokyo 1999, exploring the Yakuza. Characters would include a veteran Japanese cop, a young guy in the Yakuza dealing with the brutality and struggles with loyalty, a young American woman that's involved with multiple people in the dark side of Tokyo as a club owner, a Japanese female reporter dealing with sexism, and a bunch of Yakuza bosses in a gang war.

Execs: :leon: Who will the main focus be on?

Showrunner: Oh, a white reporter, the most boring character on the show.

Execs: :beli:

Show was dope but it took me months to finish.. I tried to watch but Jake was boring at first so I stopped it when it first came out but I went back now and got through it no problem… The Japanese cast carried this show something serious too :manny:.. I need a season 2 I gotta see what happens next

I want to watch but I don't want to support proven pedo Ansel Egort. Why the fukk is this pasty pervert getting that industry push?

I liked this show but this is a prime example of a main character being carried by the premise and supporting cast.
The plot of this show would go on fine and not skip a beat without the jake character or samantha

prime example of studios thinking american audiences need white leads to care about/ sell these dramas

Hopefully season 2 slaps

I mean, the show is based on a book by a White guy (Jake Adelstein), and that book is based on his "experience" in Japan in the '90s and early '00s.

Though the accuracy of Adelstein's "experiences" in Japan are sus.

:francis: How I felt about Netflix's Marco Polo, I like it but it to got the point where everyone around Polo was way more interesting and even though he's the titular character it felt like it was really Kublai Khan's show.
