Let me tell u what I remember about last year when I was sitting on a park bench with some neighborhood folks. This gangster ass puerto rican 40+ old was playing Future on his smartphone. The bench is filled with me and like 4 other 20+ olds. When Future says "I fukked your bytch in some Gucci Flip Flops" everyone laughed except me because that line never impressed me...But it impressed everyone else on the bench. So who is to say that line wasn't impressive? Me the minority or the majority??

You.

In case you haven't noticed, the majority of people listen to and watch crap for a wide variety of reasons. They're not even thinking about whether that line is impressive or not. So why would you, a 'thinking' hip hop fan who knows or should know better, second-guess yourself knowing damn well you're the only one thinking about this shyt?

:jbhmm:

So again...what defines "mind blowing".....OP loves Asap.....well I live in NYC and I see more people fukking with Future then Asap.

That's totally fair. Future makes generic pop rap. More people like that shyt compared to something more artistic, rugged and challenging. You're not telling me anything I don't already know.

When have the majority ever been ahead of the curve? The answer is probably 'never'.

is it what Op the minority says or is it what the majority says???

OP the minority.

Although, the real answer is "the majority of serious hip hop fans", of which I'm one of them. We're the minority all things considered but we're a sizable minority. And frankly, we're the ones that keep this hip hop shyt afloat.

The majority you're talking about are not serious hip hop fans so their opinion is mostly moot. I wouldn't discount their opinion and I welcome their opinion, but I'm not going to give their opinion the same intellectual weight that I'd give to someone who's more informed. It's just common sense.

LOL. If the majority of serious hip hop fans, which we both consider ourselves to be, are the ones who are qualified to determine what a great rapper is with mind blowing shyt yet I say 'Kendrick is great' and you dont then how does that work?? :dwillhuh:

I say Lil B is absolute trash but you dont...How does that work??:patrice:

This is why dialogue is necessary. Of course serious hip hop fans are not monotholic. We can disagree on certain things, even major things. With that said, we tend to have some sort of a consensus.

My point is: dialogue is important because
a) We get to see if you really are a serious hip hop fan - there are a lot of people that love to pretend and want that stamp but aren't really informed/eclectic like that

b) I can at least see your POV even if I don't agree.

If you think Kendrick Lamar is a great rapper, my next question is "what makes him a great rapper?" I'm not even saying 'his generation', I'm talking about great in general. All eras (which is what the thread title implies)

:jbhmm:

I have very concrete reasons for why Lil B is not trash. I've sat and given it much thought. Do you have concrete/thoughtful reasons why Lil B is absolute trash? Are you intimately familiar with Lil B's discography or you're just shooting from the hip?

I'm intimately familiar with Kendrick's material. So when I say he's garbage, I'm coming from an informed position. I've heard all the songs people say are great from dude. Read the lyrics, I know why his fans consider him dope, I've considered his fans opinions and really tried to take it in. Can you say you've done the same for Lil B? Do you know why people consider him dope?

LOL....Now u contradicting yourself. First u said that me as the individual who is a real hip Hop fan qualifies to know what a great rapper is not the majority. But now u bringing up a consensus. And the consensus says Kendrick is great. But u been shyting on anyone saying Kendrick is great in this very thread. :heh:

You going in circles...I know trolling when I see it. Your next response will be about me not explaining why Kendrick is great......I know trolling when I see it. :obama:

Nah. But if you're in a hurry to exit, it may seem that way. My point is very clear. I'm separating hip hop fanatics/the extremely well-informed... from casuals/pretenders/non-hip hop fans. The majority of hip hop fanatics are the ones that determine consensus.

There is no consensus on Kendrick by the way. Interscope is forcing one, but that doesn't mean it's gonna stick. Interscope forced Eminem as a guaranteed top 5 rapper of all-time, yet if you put actual hip hop heads in a room to discuss top 5s, his name doesn't come up. GQ and Pitchfork might consider Kendrick to be a great rapper in that all-time conversation, but GQ and Pitchfork aren't hip hop. They're casuals/vultures. So they're not part of that consensus.

If I had to guess... if you were to put actual hip hop fans in a room and have a honest debate about whether Kendrick is a great rapper or not, the majority of responses will range from "he's trash" to "he's above average, especially for his era". Very few, if any, will put him in that all-time conversation. Which is the point of this thread.

I can't explain it any better than I already have, breh. If you want to take the easy way out and consider it trolling, by all means :salute:

Your next response will be about me not explaining why Kendrick is great

nah. But I sense your desperation tho :umad:

So this is all u have to hold on to to downplay Kendricks greatness? A bullshyt guess? :heh: A scenario that I dont even agree would happen?:mjlol:

U say put a bunch of actual Hip Hop heads in a room and numerous responses will say Kendrick is trash? What the fukk will actual hip Hop heads say in a room about Lil B?:russ:. Lord Jamar is an actual Hip Hop head (Yes his opinion has way more merit then yours :comeon:) and he said Lil B was trash.

This is you going in circles again. Bullshyt theorys with holes that just have u going in circles with contradcitions for the sake of arguing about nothing. If we put a bunch of actual Hip Hop heads up against Lil B and kendrick your bullshyt theory will go out the window because Kendrick will be shytting on Lil B. I dare u to say actual Hip Hop heads would in any way put Lil B over Kendrcik...dont even play yourself :stopitslime:

This is why u not making any sense bigging up Lil B while shytting on Kendrick. But u trolling so i get it. :youngsabo:

I never said Lil B was a GREAT rapper. When you read the title and the post, and it says "Today's generation doesn't have a single great rapper", that includes Lil B :what:

Are you even reading this thread or you're just responding off emotion? I'll let you have the last word. You shouldn't be doing full-time hours in this thread, especially if you're not gonna pay attention

U know damn well I'm paying attention.....These are your words;

-LOL at nikkas who criticize Rocky and Lil B for not having 'depth'

- In fact, the greatest rhymes I've heard from the new school are from Lil B

Now u might not have straight up said Lil B isn;'t a great rapper but u were implying it by bigging him up twice and putting him in this made up category of high standard by saying he has served u with some of the greatest rhymes u have heard from this era

Your troll game on this one has holes but its helping me kill time at work :youngsabo:

Fantano makes an excellent point starting around 2:13 about how today's 'so-called hip hop' generation aren't really looking for something substantial. They like vague, passive music that is essentially background music. Drake is certainly guilty of this but to pin it solely on him is disingenuous as fukk - everyone's doing it, especially faux-deep rappers. Who is really making that passionate, in-your-face "you have to listen to this" music? In 2017, no one really.

And this is a huge reason why this generation doesn't have a single great rapper.

It's funny: of the 'big 3' - Drake, J Cole and Kendrick - Kendrick and J Cole make the most disposable music. Zero replay value.

This era is so fukked :laff:
