Not sure if this is true or not, but I've heard NYC is a cold ass town. 'Keep to yourself, don't touch me, don't get close to me, what are you talking to me for'....kind of town. Obviously, that doesn't apply to everyone, but at the end of the day, someone should have attempted to stop the train or waive it down at least, instead of just look while this person perished.

I don't think that's the case at all.

I won't disagree with you, it's just something I've heard. But if you've been down south, you'll see people saying hi for no reason, standing close in line to you, etc., which I've heard is uncommon for NY. But again, this is based on just a small sampling of people I know from NY - not trying to generalize.

Oh it is complete generalization and anecdotal. I'm sure there are plenty of NYC'ers who would have risked their own lives to help that man. Unfortunately, none of them were in that subway station. That being said, I was raised in NYC but my current job has me traveling all over the place so I notice the provincial and parochial differences. Indifference is one of those things that I found to be much more pronounced in NYC. Only place where fukkers charge me a dollar to bum a smoke:smugdraper:

There is definitely a lot of bystander effect at work in public situations, though. I remember being in Harlem and seeing a crowd of people gasping and standing at this corner. I walk up and see that a dude is on the ground/slumped against a wall with his hand on his stomach, covered in blood, barely conscious. He'd been shot. People were sort of just standing there like zombies, looking but not doing anything about it. I asked around and realized no one had even talked to dude or called 911, so I did. It's shocking on one level, but I think people tend to behave in this way often.

Yeah I know what you mean. It depends on the situation I guess. If I'm walking around a busy area I'm not going to say hello to everyone I see. If I'm out walking at night I might say good evening or whatever if we make eye contact and it seems appropriate. I know most of the people on my block by eye sight and talk to them. I talk up women on the train if I'm bored or intoxicated. I have a lot of good conversations with people in the service industry when I'm out during my day. Women strike up conversations with me all the time granted I'm a good looking guy.

I think 'strangers' are more apt to talk to people in indoor settings restaurants, bars, museums, coffee shops, etc etc. As you probably have more in common and are on the same level(no classism).

I really don't think its as bad as people to make it out to be. I'm not crazy outgoing but if I want to strike up a conversation I can.

As corny as this sounds there's a lot of cool young people in New York it's really laid back.

bar etiquette is really good here as well

Im not gonna lie, i would have yelled and screamed but i would not have gone over to try and pull him up.

You know how easy it would be for him to pull your ass off the platform while you are trying to help him? fukk that. If it was family, then yeah, but not for a stranger.

If that man was standing there for 22 seconds he could have ran to the end of the platform past where the train would stop.

LOL, how can anyone defend this guy. He sold a picture of a guy before his death. He made money off this guy demise. The Post is trash but he's trash for seeing a guy about to die and thinking, "Oh let me snap a photo". B.S. @ "I was trying to get the driver attention" Yea cause subway drivers stop from flashes from cameras. No he was trying to make his money cause that what he does. This guy is sick. But Post is tabloid status in NY, they can't be taken seriously. Murdock owns them.

Sure, but this is borderline snuff material. It was wrong to take the photo, to sell it to the paper, and for the paper to print it. This isn't some photo of a warzone or starving or maimed children meant to inspire humanitarianism. It's pure voyeuristic disaster porn and there's not much defensible in that, whether or not the photographer could have saved the man.

Do you understand the history of train casualties in NY?

Japan, but from the 989
Maybe its just me..but I wouldn't have sold the pictures of someone's last moments before getting hit by a DAMN TRAIN!! Kind of reminded me of how people were selling pictures of people jumping out of the world trade center when it was on fire.

There is no excuses for that photographer, he is a bytch ass fakkit for snapping them photos and fukk out of here with that bullshyt excuse...

That said I don't think yall understand how fast those trains come into the station...Its not easy for a normal human being to lift himself and a grown man (who was intoxicated btw) up on a 6 foot ledge in 22 seconds with a big ass train coming at you...The moment you can see those train lights its downright suicidal to attempt to jump down on the tracks...The best anyone could have done is try to pull dude up...
