Interesting point made by Sean Z. on the Porter way podcast.... The fighters who have won the most rounds against Canelo have all come from the eastern euro system, and they utilized the jab heavily in their gameplan.
Golovkin and Kovalev.
Canelo’s whole’s game plan is just to walk right through all of these jabs and punish these guys to the body. He’s willing to trade 1 jab for 1 power shot every time. And most of the time it works. Plant was having success with the jab early. But by the mid rounds he was just pawing it out there cause he was so nervous of what was coming back. That’s when canelo really started applying pressure.
Same with kovalev. Canelo just kept walking through his jab and pummeling him with body shots until he folded. Canelo usually finds a way around these guys jabs and makes em pay for it. Golovkin has an insanely high pain tolerance so he was able to withstand the punishment. But look what it cost him. Dude can barely take a body shot now cause of the damage he took in that rematch. And that’s why most guys can’t keep up the jab when they face canelo. It just costs them too much.
I’m not as much worried about bivols jab as I am his footwork. He’s good at controlling distance. He’s a naturally bigger guy. Decent hand speed. I’m worried canelo might not be able to cut the ring off for a while and could drop 3-4 early rounds. I wouldn’t be too mad with a 4-2 bivol lead after 6. As long as canelo is able to get some good body work in.
And I’m still worried about the vegan shyt. Just doesn’t make sense to me when he’s on a winning streak. Seems like a huge diet change like that usually happens when you’re forced to do it cause of a health issue. Or you’re not happy with the way you’ve been performing. He had to feel it would benefit him in the ring. But still an odd decision to make coming into a tough fight at a higher weight class. But who knows. Maybe he’ll look better than ever.
I’m officially hyped for this. As we know. Canelo will find a way
