Espinoza on Why SHO Rejected McGregor-Malignaggi Footage

A few days ago, UFC President Dana White spoke to the media and revealed that Showtime was sent video footage from the now infamous sparring sessions between UFC superstar Conor McGregor and former two division champion Paulie Malignaggi.

According to White,Showtime refused to run the footage as part of their "All-Access" series to promote McGregor's upcoming Showtime Pay-Per-View showdown with Floyd Mayweather - which takes place on August 26 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

White is claiming that Showtime didn't want to make Malignaggi look bad.

Malignaggi is part of Showtime's broadcast team and he will be part of the crew at ringside for the Mayweather-McGregor PPV.

“The last thing I want to do is get in a beef with Showtime, but we gave them a ton of the footage of the sparring, and they denied it because they didn’t want to make Paulie look bad,” White said. “They had a ton of the sparring footage, and they wanted to use zero (of it).”

Stephen Espinoza, the Executive VP and General Manager of Showtime Sports, paints a much different picture of what actually took place.

“Dana’s misinformed here because we were dealing directly with Conor’s team on this,” Espinoza told Sporting News. “We did not receive as Dana said, a ton of footage. We received a few short clips. Roughly a minute total which were provided by the Conor camp. We reviewed them and were very interested in using them and including them in “All Access”.

“But it was a series of sort of spliced-together McGregor highlights, eight or nine seconds each. We didn’t want to use the whole thing. It was sort of repetitive. We were told if we didn’t use the whole segment as they edited it then we couldn’t use it at all. So in the end, Conor’s camp withheld permission for us to use it. Otherwise, we definitely wanted to use it. There was no intent to protect Paulie. We just wanted to cut some of the clips because it was pretty redundant, repetitive stuff.”

In the last two weeks, one of the biggest side-stories to next Saturday's fight is the sparring session beef between Malignaggi and McGregor.

McGregor claims he battered Malignaggi and dropped the former world champion. His team released carefully selected photos and videos to enforce their statements. Malignaggi claims the images and short video clips are misleading of what actually took place in the full 36 minute sparring clash.

McGregor aint pushing for VADA, he's fine with USADA testing, so I dont have any issues with it

Now if Floyd or McGregor was pushing for VADA, and the other kept refusing, then its time to be suspicious

Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn’t putting too much stock into anything Conor McGregor did while sparring against Paulie Malignaggi.

Mayweather wasn’t impressed after watching the brief footage that has been released. In fact, the undefeated five-division champion noticed McGregor fouling more than anything as the Irish southpaw prepared for their August 26 showdown at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“I had a chance to see it and my thoughts is I think it was real interesting, but a lot of rabbit punching, a lot of illegal rabbit punches behind the head,” Mayweather said during a conference call Thursday. “A lot of shots was illegal. A lot of grappling, a lot of wrestling and a lot of illegal shots. I mean, that’s just my honest opinion.

“But I think I’m pretty sure the referee’s gonna be fair on both sides. I want the referee [Robert Byrd] to be fair and treat both competitors, myself and Conor McGregor, treat us both – be even and treat us fair. And I just wanna have a good, solid fight.”

Mayweather was noncommittal when asked about the much-discussed knockdown McGregor counted and Malignaggi contends was caused by a push and a trip.

“Some may call it a knockdown, some may not call it a knockdown,” Mayweather said. “At the end of the day, it only counts once you get under those lights. That’s just the gym.”

Regardless, Mayweather won’t base much about McGregor from those sparring sessions because the retired Malignaggi was far from peak physical condition when he traveled to Las Vegas to spar with McGregor.

@Newzz yes in recent times VADA has caught more boxers than USADA, despite that both organizations have roughly the same level of effectiveness. I see nothing wrong with a fighter choosing to not go for VADA testing if they are going through USADA/WADA or any other that has a good reputation. I'm not going to say which is better because both organizations have controversy surrounding it. We've seen with USADA the controversy surrounding Broner-Demarco (lying about results), the Morales situation, throwing out tests then giving vague reasons as to why so I can see why there is distrust towards USADA.

At the same time I can see why people don't trust VADA either. We heard Robert Garcia mention the testing when it came to Rios and how he was told to piss in a cup then it was just sent off somewhere.. makes some believe that VADA could potentially tamper with some results either way that testing was unprofessional . We've also seen that Conte is associated with VADA and that already has people suspicious especially since hes worked with fighters (I believe he still does?) , so now there are questions of whether theres a conflict of interest.

Its clear in boxing that VADA wants to push USADA out and become the drug testing agency for the sport and thats fine, I just don't like some of the bully tactics they do to get it - like 'oh if you dont test with us you must be on PEDs ' . Both do their job of cleaning sport, of course nothing is perfect but its better than nothing.

Lastly, if you don't have a problem with Floyd using USADA then why are we having this conversation? Would you be against a fighter choosing to not go for VADA if they went for USADA instead?

Floyd doesn't need to go for the KO. He can box easily and get the wide point UD. But alot of ppl feel Conor going the distance is a victory for him and Floyd said it himself. So maybe Floyd goes for the KO...at 40 years old tho? Coming off a 2 year retirement? He hasn't had a KO victory since 2007. So ten years later he's gonna get one?
