Time to Get Honest About These Title Reigns Brehs

Inspired by a bit of discussion in the Smackdown 1000th episode thread...

I always look at Orton/Edge/Cena like "they had HOW MANY reigns?!"

Flairs title reigns make sense based of his gimmick. Cheating heel and underdog face. Cena having 16 just means he gets to beat everyone that beat him so nobody is truly elevated. He jobs so you can't say he never put anyone over. Orton idk even know.

Some of these past and current stars have some very bloated title reigns. Edge with 11, Orton with 13, HHH with 14, Cena with 16 This is a lot.

Now if you went back in time when these title reigns happened and there were no injuries, no pay disputes, no nepotism, how many honest title reigns would some of these men and women have? Tag titles, IC titles can count too.

once wcw went under, title reigns became irrelevant to me. you've had one company with 2 and sometimes 3 "world championships" at one time.

It’s a similar concept with the midcard belts. How many reigns have/did guys like Kofi, Ziggler, Barrett, etc. have with the IC/US belts? Those titles were supposed to be stepping stones for rising stars on their way up the card and back in the day they were. Instead they eventually became ceilings for guys that the company might’ve valued, but not at a main event level. So you’ve got someone like say, Ziggler with like 5 or 6 runs with the IC belt when there were atleast a few times during those runs where he was ready to graduate beyond that level, but they never put the machine behind him, so he became what we have today.

I remember years ago (before he won a few years back) looking at Rock’s 7 title reigns thinking no one would ever surpass that.

No one, not even Ric Flair, should ever hold the world championship 10 times.

In fact, I think 8 is pushing it. That belt should be hard to attain and even harder to keep and contend for.

However ... of all these overblown reign numbers? Edge's make the most sense. Because none of his reigns ever lasted that long, and it always seemed like he weaseled his way into the title picture (ultimate opportunist). Flair is a 16 time world champion and he had like 4 or 5 reigns that legit went longer than one calendar year. How, Sway??


As far as the Intercontinental Championship? Look at it this way... the best IC champions I can remember/revisited through classic footage were Randy Savage, The Miz, The Rock, and Legend Killer Randy Orton. Seth Rollins is on his way but the Shield shyt is fukking him up.

Orton and Savage only held that belt one time. The Rock held it twice. Only the Miz actually overdid it with the reigns. Less is more, most of the time.

Cena’s runs with the belt:
1. Wrestlemania 21-NYR 2006
The wheels came off him as a lead face during this reign while they stripped everything that got him over away.

2. Royal rumble-ONS 2006
3 weeks later he gets it back to keep doing business as usual from the previous 9 months. The only memorable part of this reign is the crowds at wrestlemania and ONS shytting all over him.

3. Unforgiven 2006- no mercy 2007
Cena’s reign of terror run with the belt. Absolutely dreadful face run here, but a few standout matches at least. 2007 was an awful year for them overall.

4. Late 2008-no way out 2009
Short run I can’t remember anything from but him losing it in the chamber.

5. Wrestlemania 25-backlash 2009
He only lost it so he could successfully challenge for it at wrestlemania, only to lose it a month later anyway. Pointless reign.

6. Breaking point-hell in a cell 2009
Wins a shytty I quit match against Orton only to lose it back to him a month later.

7. Bragging rights-tlc 2009
Lost it 2 months after winning it in a manner designed to make Sheamus look weak.

8. Elimination chamber 2010
Lost it minutes after winning it to set up his match with Batista a month later.

9. Wrestlemania 26-sometime in the summer I think
I don’t recall anything about this reign. I assume the nexus cost him the title. It started just as Batista was doing his best work too.

10. Extreme rules-money in the bank 2011
Ruined Miz as a main event guy, but this reign ended in a great match against punk for the title.

11. Raw July-summerslam 2011
shyt all over mysterio and lost to punk again.

12. Night of champions-hell in a cell 2011
Punks out del rio and beats him clean in a match he had no business being in and loses it back to him a month later in a match that did nobody any favors.

13. Wrestlemania 29-summerslam 2013
Twice in a lifetime being built towards ruined almost all of 2012 and the only good parts of this reign were Mark Henry with the retirement swerve and Bryan shocking everyone with the win, but cena was presented as an afterthought in the events that followed the match.

14. Hell in a cell-tlc 2013
Beats del rio to win it when they could’ve used a fresh face for that. Buried sandow, only to lose the belt to Orton some 6-7 weeks later.

15. Money in the bank-summerslam 2014
Wins a ladder match for the belt when a fresh face could’ve used it. Gets splattered by Brock 2 months later.

16. Royal rumble-elimination chamber 2017
Completely derails AJ styles momentum as he’s demoted from champ to second or third match at wrestlemania. Lost the belt a month after winning it to bray Wyatt, who himself lost it to Orton a month later.

When you break it down reign by reign, cena’s list isn’t pretty either

It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have so much silliness. Like, for example, Edge gets stripped of the title because he used the spear which was banned by Vickie Guerrero and she awards the title to Dolph Ziggler, but Edge gets a rematch and wins the title again . So instead of one long reign for Edge, he gets two out of it while Dolph gets a 15 minute reign Pro wrestling man
