Determining vocal merit also depends on the ears listening. I’m an instrumentalist/singer and a lot of my friends are musicians, so we predisposed to singers that vocalize as if they’re playing instruments. Me and my boys have (I play keys and the sax) our lil monthly sheds and discuss this stuff a lot. To the common consumer, their favorite male singers would probably be a Stevie, or MJ or Prince, while we would gravitate to a Tank (my favorite male vocalist) because of the level of musicianship in his singing

Most ppl wouldn’t get it cause their ears can’t interpret what’s going on, but to us it’s insane showmanship.

I'm a composer and you are 100% on with this, the average person is oblivious to this concept...

Singers like Aaliyah and MJB are for the men.

Singers like Beyonce and Mariah Carey are for the women and gay dudes, although they got some songs I personally like.

word

Aaliyah type is the kind of singing I want to hear my girl sing after sex. When I’m just chillin with my eyes closed and she just “whispering” away with that sexy voice.

sang “at your best” to me after I bust this nut.

Aaliyah was a cool singer and her production fit her singing style perfectly

but let's be reality her vocals aren't touching Beyonce, Mariah, Whitney etc as far as power vocals

She knew how to use her voice as an instrument within the rest of the production

Minnie Riperton understood the same concepts and she’s one of the greatest vocalists of all time. She just seldomly showed her entire range, only when the production called for it.

Exactly.

Only on the coli where saying someone isn’t a bad singer means you’re comparing them to the greatest singers of all time.

Im just throwing shots at that Beyoncé stan I @‘d.

Beyoncé is a more powerful singer.

That’s undeniable.

She puts a lot of effort into everything she does and it shows, while Aaliyah made everything she did seem effortless and natural, with better results.

Her singing worked great for her. There are great "power voice" singers that wouldnt sound good singing 4 Page Letter.

Imagine Fantasia yellin' "I'M SENDIN YOU A FOUR PAGE LETTERRRR:damn:"

Edit: 'Tasia CAN soften her singing, so maybe she was a bad example. I just wanted to use that gif:mjgrin:
I like Aaliyah’s voice, she doesn’t have huge power behind it but it’s versatile and she knows how to use it. It’s kind of like JT and JC from NSYNC, JC had more power but he couldn’t sing a say Cry Me A River.

Brandy’s voice is more what OP is describing.

Beyoncé voice really didn't become stronger till she was in her mid-late 20s ...

Just putting that out there that Aaliyah had that in her as well unfortunately she passed at age 22.

Both got songs I like, Mariah in particular, but you're right, there's def a gay vibe to some of their music lol. I wonder why that is. Both are kinda "theatrical" I guess. :dame::dead:
