agree to disagree on that

I would like to see the US with protections at least as strong as EU's
all of our military cloud services run on AWS.

Google has nearly 25 years of data on all
americans.

TikTok is nowhere near that.

No US social media or even Google is allowed in China, for the same reasons the US wants to ban tik tok.
100%

I've seen so many seemingly like-minded people be so loud, strong and (imo) wrong when it comes to TikTok.

It doesn't matter that Facebook does the same thing, it matters that our citizens opinions can be subtly manipulated by forces that oppose Americans way of life.

Facebook is a piece of shyt company that puts profits above everything, but that is capitalistic/American AF at the end of the day. Even still, Facebook's indifference about the impact of its product has led to terrible outcomes for teenagers, especially teenage girls... Now, imagine what impact they could have if they actively tried to harm the American population....

That is why a foreign adversary can't own the most popular app in the country that accounts for ~10% of users' conscious activity daily. That type of influence is unrivaled and can step on the scales of our democracy in subtle, untraceable ways.

I'm not a fan of the narrative that they were the reason that the Israel/Hamas war got traction, as it sounds like Americans wouldn't have otherwise been well-informed about the atrocities being committed w/ backing by the West, but at the same time, that is actually true for the average American. I think it is possible that the algorithm pushes what gets traction, while it's also possible that the Chinese government can incentivize certain themes to inundate timelines for their own benefit.

On top of that, once the ban was getting traction, the fact that they sent a push notification to mobilize millions of their users to politically reach out to their congresspeople just reinforces the potential power they can wield.

It's going to suck if/when some far-right company takes over TikTok and puts their fingers on the algorithm/scale, but that is still the evil you know vs the evil you don't.

These same posters were all in on Cambridge Analytica which makes this current position they're taking all the more baffling.

okay, they're government contractors, they should maybe be more diversified and or have better security(more money for the MIC? lol)
At least the US government controls it, can regulate it, is aware of it, and can monitor it...

How are you still missing the point?

Again you're not arguing with someone who doesn't want better data protection for US citizens and ultimately by TokTik being sold that will actually be happening

They don’t and that’s not how that works in a lot of cases. These vendors usually direct the government what to do.

forcing TikTok to sell to fukking Steve Mnuchin so he could can control that data that he can share with his Saudi friends helps no one.

Cambridge Analytica is the perfect example of why banning TikTok has nothing to do with protecting citizens from foreign influence. Regulation across all social media would make sense, but TikTok alone? The fact that you thought this would be a gotcha makes no sense.
Russian, Israeli and Chinese bots flood Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, etc, and you want us to believe this is about foreign influence... Make it make sense.

This is about the US not having the ability to influence people through TikTok and nothing else.

Censorship?

I honestly really hope that certain people in here are on DNC payroll because otherwise I can't understand why they would constantly be pushing dumbass talking points for free :mindblown:

You have to be a fukking idiot or have major cognitive dissonance to believe Steve Minuchin, Oracle or Walmart will protect consumer data and privacy. Like once Walmart takes over they'll make social media safer for the kids.

This is about the US not having the ability to influence people through TikTok and nothing else.
My guess is that Meta and Google also probably lobbied hard for this as well since TikTok's algorithm is kicking their ass. They tried to compete with Reels and Shorts but it's not working.

Right, and TikTok has servers in the USA. They use AWS and Oracle in the US.
And if that hosting were to be taken away, it does not end nor limit tik tok. Part of the reason that foreign vehicles are assembled here is so that assembly can be regulated by the US.

Fam, you're smarter than this.

Meta had an anti TikTok lobbying and marketing campaign.

US companies own the internet outside of China. TikTok is the first threat to that dominance, and so those companies responded by doing this shyt.
