I remember listening to a video explaining why Anime but specifically OVA's and Anime Movies were hella violent and at the time the authors took many liberties due to the studios not being on their case. The shounen back then that weren't OVA's were pretty tame, I remember seeing how Fist Of The North Star anime and the movie was hella different in terms of violence.
